Weekly Reports
Season 2008 / 2009
Thursday 7th May 2009 - Finals Night
This year as last we enter the Sheaf of Wheat to play our finals and once again the atmosphere was tense, the restaurant transformed into an arena for the combat to take place. The beer was on tap and started to flow which meant the draws could be done. The first draw was for the 5 Man Team competition and pitched last years defending Champions the Rugby Club against the Howards and 2006/07 Champions the Croft against the Pool Club 'A'. The attention then turned to the Singles draw which saw the outsider of the 4 Paul Beadnell (Sheaf 'B') drawn against Peter Hart (Cornish) and Jonathan Peters (Rugby) against Jason Shaw (Howards).
Once the draw was done there was no stopping these finely tuned atheletes as they strained at the leash to start the 5 Man Team semi finals, first up the Rugby Club against the Howards. The Howards who had shown so much promise found themselves tossed aside like a soiled tissue as the Rugby Club took the match 3-0 with wins from Jonathan Peters, Maurice Francis and Simon Pollard. The second semi though took a different turn as it started with a win for Ian Hodgkinson 1-0 to the Croft then 1-1, then 2-1 to the Pool Club with a good win for Lee tacagni over Chris Worrall, and then Mick Hastings making it 2-2, all the pressure was on the next 2 up to the table .....Colin Duffy and Steve Smith. Now Steve was the man responsible for ending my own involvement is this competition and had played an absolute blinder in doing so but he found himself on the ropes as Colin pounded him, but Steve hung in there and Colin with only one yellow and a black left on the table took aim. Oh ny god he rattled the yellow and a buzz of excitement fizzed round the room as Steve took aim and sunk the black to make it a Rugby Club v Croft final, the excitement and tension was just too much.
Next up came the singles semis and not to put too fine a point on it they were a bit one sided to say the least as both finish 2-0. First up was Paul Beadnell against Peter Hart and Paul suffering from man flu did all he could to stop Peter but Peter just had too much for him , next up Jonathan Peters did a fine job despatching Jason Shaw 2-0, with both finalists in fine form we looked forward to a real gladitorial battle in the final. At this point the door of the kitchen flew open an Eric appeared with a procession of tasty morsels for us all to devour and devour they did..... Pizza, Sandwiches, Sausages, Chicken, Sausage Rolls, Coated Chips the choice was endless. Eventually the melee in front of the food died down and a few lonely morsels survived, back to the Pool.
The first Final to be played was the 5 Man Team with last years Champions the Rugby Club playing the Champions of 2006/07 the Croft. The Rugby Club started well with Jonathan Peters winning but Richard Goldsmith levelled for the Croft. Simon Pollard and Chris Worrall had a tense frame with Simon just edging it to make it 2-1 to the Rugby Club, Mick Hastings had to win against last years singles KO Champion Ricky Chilton to keep the Crofts hopes alive. Ricky had other ideas and in a tense frame Ricky had the last word to secure a 3-1 victory for the Rugby Club who retain their title as 5 Man Team KO Champions.
Next up was the Doubles KO Final with JC Theodore and Dave Venn of the Legion taking on Shane Eddy and Andy Peters of the Cornish. The doubles this year had been played all the way to the final so the players had been waiting and warming up for a while and this had added to the tension in the room, with the waiting over the first break was made. The first frame proved to be a really tight affair with both teams playing very tactical but Shane and Andy finally took it, the second frame saw a similar pattern take place but this time the outcome was reversed as JC and Dave Venn levelled the match. The tension was growing and the last frame was started well by the Cornish pair who held the advantage right through to the end, but JC and Dave Venn pulled out all the stops but alas for them it turned out not to be enough as Shane and Andy finally potted the black and took the game to become the KO Doubles Champions.
We then moved on to the Singles KO Final with Jonathan Peters and Peter Hart both playing some really good Pool, Jonathan broke and set about clearing the balls from the table and with the black left for an 8 ball things were looking grim for Peter, but the black rattled and Peter came to the table. With the tension high Peter set about buisness and with nerves screaming cleared down to the black, a deep breath and the black was potted, what a frame to start an 8 ball clearance. The second frame proved to be just as good but more tactical but this time Jonathan levelled and at 1-1 Peter broke the next. Again it was another tight and tense frame which saw some really fine Pool being played and once again Jonathan came out on top to lead 2-1, with the next frame being crucial Peter couldn't afford to let another frame slip and he held it all together to take the frame and make it 2-2. The final frame proved to be as excitng as the 4 before and the final had come down to a best of 1 frame game that Peter started really well, JP fought back and with the match finally balance he came to the table and with nerves tingling he cleared down to the black ball with some really fine play leaving a shot on the black into the middle pocket. You could cut the tension with a knife as JP got down and lined up the black he drew the cue back and sunk the black into the middle..... what a final, what a match a truling fitting match to enf the night on.
After all that excitement it was time for the presentations, at this point though we had a moment to bring us all back down to earth as we remembered a player who had graced our league over the years. David 'Fozzy' Foster who sadly died a short while ago, a minutes silence was observed and we all raised a glass to him, for tose that knew Fozzy he will be sadly missed.
Once agian the League has concluded for another year and a cracking finals night has been had, many thanks to Eric, Linda, Michelle and all at the Sheaf of Wheat who did us proud once again. Many thanks to Chris Dunn who did a fine job as a ref and generally helping out all round, but we have now discovered his motives behind this but alas nobody wanted Larry on a free transfer. Thanks to the committee, especially Paul Beadnell, who help to make this League and Finals possible and finally thanks to all you who took part and keep this league as fun and enjoyable as ever.
Just remember if you can't remember and your pockets are full of change it's been a great night... until next season have a good one, see you in September for some more Booze and Cues!!!!!
Thursday 23rd April 2009 - Week 30
So we come to the last week of games with thr League decided and the Most Singles Wins decided but there was still the Doubles and Overall Champions to decide. Also the small matter of the Sheaf 'A' and Sheaf 'B' bragging rights for the following season....
Golden Lion v Lifeboat Inn - With the Lion trying to avoid the wooden spoon for this season things didn't start too well as they found themselves trailing 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Lion take the first frame before the Lifeboat took the next 3 and the match 8-4.
Pool Club 'A' v 3 Ferrets - The Ferrets started well at the Pool Club and won the first 2 frames but by the end of the singles they found themselves losing 5-3. The doubles didn't improve as the Pool Club took 3 out of the 4 frames to win the match 8-4 and finish an up and down season with a win.
Sazbah v Howards - Sometimes I get comments on the back of score sheets, some good some bad, but I think this sums up the St Ives Pool League perfectly. I quote "Seventies dress, Suits, Roast Dinner, what else would you want for the last game of the season. Hats off to the Sazbah for their hospitality, just a shame about the result" The Howards Team. As for the game the Sazbah won the singles 6-2 and took the doubles 4-0 to end the match 10-2 winners.
British Legion v Engine Inn - The Engine visited the British Legion but must of been affected by the journey as only Tim Poole of the Engine could manage to win a singles frame as they trailed 7-1. The doubles saw things improve for the Engine as they took 3 out of the 4 frames to end the match as 8-4 losers to the British Legion.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - In the cauldron known as the Sheaf of Wheat the Sheaf 'A' took on the Sheaf 'B' for bragging rights next season, with the Sheaf 'B' needing an 8-4 win to finish above the Sheaf 'A'.Things started well for the Sheaf 'A' as they led 2-1, but then came Brian Ashwin and a magnificent 8 Ball clearance as the Sheaf 'B' took control and pushed 5-3 ahead at the end of the singles. The Sheaf 'B' needed 3 frames in the doubles and with one left to play the score was 7-5 to the Sheaf 'B', with the game won the last frame was needed to take the bragging rights. Stand up team Captain Paul Beadnell who under the intense pressure held his nerve to pot a truly brilliant black ball double and secure the bragging rights for his team the Sheaf 'B', so queue the celebrations for Linda's boys.
Rugby Club v Croft - With the League in the bag the Rugby Club hosted the Croft, the singles started off very tightly as frames were shared until the Croft took a grasp and won the last 3 frames to lead 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the teams share the frames 2-2 and the Croft take the match 7-5 the first team to beat the Rugby Club for many weeks.
Cornish Arms v Halsetown Inn - With the League finally out of reach the Cornish knew they were clear in the runners up spot and had nothing really to play for. The Halsetown took full advantage of this and took the first 2 frames before the Cornish woke up and fought back to end the singles 5-3 leaders. The doubles saw the Cornish a bit more like their usual selfs as they took 3 out out of 4 frames to finish the game 8-4 winners.
Performance of the Week - Sazbah
Thursday 16th April 2009 - Week 29
If the results go right the Rugby Club could take the League this week, and also the individual competitions could be decided this week.
Halsetown Inn v Queens Hotel - TBA
Croft v Cornish Arms - With the Rugby Club 10 points in front the Cornish could not afford a slip up against the Croft. The Croft started very well winning the first 2 frames but then the Cornish took the next 3 to make it 3-2 until the Croft dug in again and took the last 3 frames to lead 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Croft carry on the good form and take the first 3 doubles frames and the match 8-4, now if the Rugby Club could manage a draw or more the League was theirs.
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Rugby Club - With the Cornish crashing to an 8-4 defeat the Rugby Club only needed a draw to take the League for this season. The singles saw the Rugby Club take 6 oout of the 8 frames in some very close games and this was enough too take the League although at the time they didn't know that. The doubles saw the Sheaf 'B' fight back as they took 3 out of 4 frames to end the match with a 7-5 win for the Rugby Club - League Champions 2008 / 2009.
Engine Inn v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - In the other big competition between the Sheaf 'A' and Sheaf 'B' the Sheaf 'A' found themselves trailing by 2 points. The singles saw the Engine's Alan Roberts be the only player to win a singles frame from the Engine as the Sheaf 'A' took the singles 7-1. The doubles saw the Sheaf take 3 out of 4 frames and the match 10-2.
Howards v British Legion - The Legion who have been extremely in and out of form recently went to the Howards anf found themselves 4-4 at the end of the singles including an eight ball clearance by Mark Williams of the Legion. The doubles saw the Legion get it together and take all 4 frames and the match 8-4.
3 Ferrets v Sazbah - The Sazbah have been playing really well lately and carried on their good form by taking the singles 5-3. The doubles saw them carry on as they took 3 out of the 4 frames and the match 8-4.
Lifeboat Inn v Pool Club 'A' - The Pool 'A' have been really out of form recently and the Lifeboat must of fancied their chances, but the Pool 'A' found their form and took the singles 6-2. The doubles saw the Pool 'A' take 3 out of the 4 frames and the match 9-3.
Performance of the Week - Rugby Club
Thursday 9th April 2009 - Week 28
With only 2 games to play after this week its all still to play for, the Cornish are still hanging onto the coat tails of the Rugby Club but only by the skin of their teeth.
Golden Lion v Pool Club - The Lion started this game really well as they won the first 3 frames before the Pool Club fought back but at the end of the singles the Lion held a narrow 5-3 lead. The doubles saw the teams keeping things close as they shared the frames for the Lion to win the match 7-5.
Sazbah v Lifeboat Inn - In recent weeks the Sazbah have been putting some great results together and they started well again against the Lifeboat, the singles saw the Sazbah leading 6-2. The doubles saw them carry on this good form as they took 3 out of the 4 frames and the match 9-3.
British Legion v 3 Ferrets - In a match that saw the Ferrets visit the Legion and start really well taking the first 2 frames and ending the singles level at 4-4. The doubles saw the Ferrets take the first frame before the Legion took the last 3 frames and the match 7-5 in a very close game.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Howards - The Howards came to the Sheaf and set about taking the singles 5-3 and causing the Sheaf 'A' a few problems. The Doubles saw the Sheaf 'A' get their act together and take 3 out of the 4 frames to level the match 6-6.
Rugby Club v Engine Inn - With the League almost in the bag and another couple of good results required the Rugby Club set about the singles and found themselves leading 5-3. The doubles saw the Rugby Club turn it on and take all 4 frames and the match 9-3 and possibly the League?
Cornish Arms v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - With the Cornish needing a good result to give them any chance of catching the Rugby Club they started the singles well leading 5-0 but by the end of the singles the Sheaf 'B' had fought back to make it 5-3. The doubles saw the Sheaf 'B' make more of a fight of it and share the frames 2-2 and the the Cornish take the match 7-5, possibly not enough to save the League.
Queens Hotel v Croft - The Queens started well but then the Croft got their teeth into the game and took the next 6 frames to lead 6-2 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the sides share the frames 2-2 and the Croft take the match 8-4.
Performance of the Week - Sazbah
Thursday 2nd April 2009 - Week 27
Apologies for the late update this week won't bore you with the reasons, anyway on with the reports and with 3 games left to play after this week the Cornish and Rugby Club both needed big results. The individual competitions are now getting down to the nitty gritty with the singles almost tied up but the doubles and overall still up for grabs with probably 6 players still in the running. We also have the singles first round of the Singles and Doubles KO now completed so all in all pretty much its system go at the moment.
Halsetown Inn v Golden Lion - TBA
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Queens Hotel - In a keenly fought match the Sheaf 'B' once again roared to a lead in the singles leading 6-2 at the break and looking for a good win. The doubles once again saw the Sheaf 'B' let the ball go slighty but still managed to take 2 frames, that should really have been 3 apart from a very poor shot, and win the match 8-4 with the Queens once again failing to win away from home.
Engine Inn v Cornish Arms - With the games running out the Cornish really needed a result and come the end of the singles it was looking like they were going to get one as they led 7-1 with only Tim Poole of the Engine winning a singles frame, and in form Jeremy Gaylard of the Cornish getting an 8 ball clearance. The doubles have been the Cornish's weakness of late but they took 3 out of 4 frames to end the match 10-2 winners and put some pressure on the Rugby Club.
Howards v Rugby Club - After last weeks 6-6 draw with the Cornish the Howards must of fancied their chances again against the Rugby Club. Come the end of the singles only Trevor Cochrane of the Howards had won a singles frame as the Rugby Club romped on to a 7-1 lead and a further grasp on the League Championship. The doubles saw the Rugby Club with the help of an 8 ball clearance by Simon Pollard take all 4 frames in the doubles and the match 11-1.making the gap 8 points with 3 game to play.
3 Ferrets v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - TBA
Lifeboat Inn v British Legion - The legion still need a couple of good results to secure 3rd and started well against the Lifeboat going 4-0 up but could only manage to turn that into a 5-3 lead at the end of the singles as the Lifeboat fought back. The doubles saw the the Legion dig deep again as the took 3 out of the 4 frames to win the match 8-4 and keep their 9 point gap from the Sheaf 'B' in 4th.
Pool Club 'A' v Sazbah - The Pool 'A' have been a bit of a nightmare this season one minute they can be great the next .... anyway the Sazbah started well leading 3-0 with an 8 ball clearance by Ollie Broadbank (3rd this week in the league) and by the end of the singles the Sazbah were 6-2 up. The doubles saw pretty much the same pattern as the Sazbah took 3 out of 4 frames to win the match 9-3.
Performance of the Week - Sazbah
Thursday 26th March 2009 - Week 26
Well we are now down to the nitty gritty part of the season with the knockouts starting this weekend its all or nothing. Four games to play and the Rugby Club have a 7 point lead over the Cornish Arms and nothing but a miracle will stop them now, but both teams still have a chance. The Individual competitions are also hotting up nicely with Dave Hart (Cornish) losing for the first time in weeks maybe just a glimmer in the singles and the Doubles and Overall is still anyone's..................
Golden Lion v Sazbah - New team this season the Sazbah have aquitted themselves well and took the short trip to visit the Lion this week and come the end of the singles had the advantage leading 5-3. The Doubles saw them drive home that advantage after a small scare and end the game 8-4 victors.
British Legion v Pool Club 'A' - The Legion who have been very up and down this season played host to the Pool 'A' who at best have also been unpredictable. The singles saw the Legion put together a 7-1 win with only Andy Badcock of the Pool 'A' taking a frame. The doubles saw the Pool 'A' take the first but once again the Legion dug in and took the next 3 to win the game 10-2.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Lifeboat Inn - With the Sheaf 'B' not playing the Sheaf 'A' had a chance to try and claw back some of the 11 point gap between them but the Lifeboat had different ideas as they took the first 3 frames. At the end of the singles the Lifebaot were leading 5-3 with the Sheaf needing as many frames from the doubles as possible. The doubles saw the Sheaf 'A' fight back and take 3 out of the 4 frames to level the match 6-6, but they still trail the Sheaf 'B' by 5 points with 4 games left to play.
Rugby Club v 3 Ferrets - With the title in their own hands the Rugby Club just need to make sure thay grind out the last 4 results and a game against the Ferrets shouldn't have proved to hard a task. The singles saw the Rugby Club lead 5-3 and at the end of the doubles thay had shared the frames 2-2 and won the match 7-5, but was this a chance for the Cornish to pull back a couple of points.
Cornish Arms v Howards - With the Rugby Club not taking full advantage of their match against the Ferrets the Cornish needed to try and take some kind of advantage against the Howards. The match started badly for the Cornish as the Howards took the first 3 frames and then Duncan Halliday (Howards) added another nail as he completed an 8 ball in his frame, the Howards led 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Cornish dig deep real deep as they fought and scrapped to win 3 out of the 4 frames to level the match 6-6 and drop another point to the Rugby Club, but don't take anything away from the Howards who very much played their part in this match.
Queens Hotel v Engine Inn - A game of two teams that are pretty evenly matched and the singles and doubles proved this as they shared the frames in both the singles and doubles to draw the match 6-6.
Halsetown Inn v Croft - The Croft took the shortish trip up the road and out of town to the Halsetown Inn and must of enjoyed the trip as they rolled out the singles 7-1 winners, with only Lee Yould of the Halsetown taking a frame. The doubles saw pretty much the same result as the Halsetown could only managed to win one frame and the Croft walked away 10-2 winners.
Performance of the Week - Howards
Thursday 19th March 2009 - Week 25
With 5 weeks left to play the individual competitions are looking very interesting, the singles wins has Dave Hart (Cornish) 3 games ahead and almost over the line and nothing but a complete collapse by Dave now will change that competition. The Doubles and Overall competitions though could be won by any one of 6 or 7 players, so still all left to play for. The League is still tight between the Rugby Club and Cornish but the Cornish will need to be at their very best to pip the Rugby Club to it now !!!!!
Croft v Golden Lion - Waiting for reports...
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Halsetown Inn - With the Sheaf 'B' being short of one of their star players due to mid season surgery the Halsetown came visiting, could the Sheaf 'B' cope without the musical input and lack of "Come on our Bloke" during the game. The answer disapointingly was yes as they stormed to a 7-1 lead the only consolation being my replacement was the only Sheaf 'B' player to lose. The doubles saw the Sheaf 'B' carry on their fantastic form of late as they took 3 out of 4 frames to take the match 10-2, Sheaf 'B' players can now be spotted passing out from lack of oxygen and having constant nose bleeds !!!!!!!!!!
Howards v Queens Hotel - The Queens travelled to the Howards and once again found themselves on the wrong end of the score line as they ended the singles 6-2 down, they seem to lose all their luck when away... strange. The doubles saw them fair a bit better as they managed to split the frames but this was only good enough for a 8-4 victory to the Howards.
3 Ferrets v Cornish Arms - The Cornish need to get some heavy wins on board to catch the Rugby Club and no disrepect to the Ferrets but they would of fancied this one for some good points. The singles saw the Ferrets take the first frame but this was just a blip as the Cornish got into gear and took the singles 6-2. Leading 6-2 the Cornish needed as many doubles as possible but once again could only manage to share the frames and win the match 8-4, not really enough to close any gaps at the top.
Lifeboat Inn v Rugby Club - With the Cornish winning 8-4 the Rugby Club needed to equal the score to stay in front and keep the pressure on. Like the Cornish they took the singles 6-2, a good effort with several key players missing, but the doubles proved important as they took 3 out of 4 frames to win the match 9-3. With 5 matches left to play and a 6 point gap it's the Rugby Club's to lose now..... can they keep their nerve or will they bottle it !!!!!!
Pool Club 'A' v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - MR DUFFY !!!!!!!!!!!
Sazbah v British Legion - The Legion in recent weeks have struggled and their 3rd place is now starting to look in doubt, a good result against the Sazbah would help to cement their place. The singles saw the Legion start well leading 3-1 but the Sazbah battled back to make it 4-4 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Sazbah turn it on and take 3 out of 4 frames and the match 7-5.... are the wheels coming off at the Legion?
Performance of the Week - Sazbah
Thursday 12th March 2009 - Week 24
After last week with the Rugby Club stretching their lead to 5 points the Cornish Arms cannot afford to slip up again otherwise it's all over for this year, with only 6 games left to play every point is vital !!!!!!!!
Golden Lion v British Legion - With the top 2 away the best the Legioncan hope for is 3rd place this season but need to keep the pressure up just in case theres a dramatic collapse above them. The singles saw only Lion captain Ruth O'Shea win a frame as the Legion raced away to a 7-1 lead going into the doubles, the doubles only saw the Legion take 3 out of the 4 frames to take the game 10-2.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Sazbah - The Sheaf 'A' still locked in battle with the Sheaf 'B' needed a good result to close the gap in the in house rivalry and started well taking the singles 6-2 against the Sazbah and were looking to increase their advantage in the doubles. The doubles though saw the Sazbah dig deep and take 3 out of the 4 frames to end the match 7-5 losers to the Sheaf 'A'....but is that enough to keep in touch with the Sheaf 'B'.
Rugby Club v Pool Club 'A' - After last week the Rugby Club would be very cautious of the Pool Club who gave the Cornish a fair old toasting. The Rugby Club started very well taking the first 6 frames without reply until the very much in form Lee Tacagni stopped the rot and at the end of the singles the Rugby Club found themselves 6-2 up. The doubles saw them show how much they are up for the fight this year as they took all 4 frames and the match 10-2.
Cornish Arms v Lifeboat Inn - With the Rugby Club winning 10-2 the Cornish had little option but to do the same or better to keep the title chase alive. The Singles saw Chris Tomlinson of the Lifeboat win a singles frame but that was the only one as the Cornish took the singles 7-1. The doubles saw the Cornish take 3 out of 4 frames to end the match 10-2 winners and keep the pressure up on the Rugby Club.... this could go right down to the last few frames of the season!!!!!!!!!!
Queens Hotel v 3 Ferrets - The Ferrets took the short trip to the Queens and found themselves 5-3 down at the end of the singles, the doubles saw the sides share the frames as the Queens seaked a 7-5 win.
Halsetown Inn v Engine Inn - In the out of town "local" derby the Halsetown entertained the Engine who took full advantage of the hospitality and took the singles 6-2. The doubles saw the teams share the frames 2-2 and the Engine take the honours 8-4.
Croft v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - With the Sheaf 'B' containing a couple of ex Croft players and both teams being very close in the league this game promised plenty. The Sheaf 'B' started well and found themselves 4-1 up until the Croft dug deep and fought back to make it 5-3 at the end of the singles to the Sheaf 'B'. The doubles saw the Sheaf 'B' take 3 out of the 4 frames and the match 8-4, making it 10 games undeafeated even with the returning Richard Dorrington in the side
Performance of the Week - Sheaf of Wheat 'B'
Thursday 5th March 2009 - Week 23
Things are really starting to boil up now with 7 games left to play every point at the top is vital any slip up now and it could be the end..........
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Golden Lion - With the Sheaf 'A' taking on the Legion the opportunity for the Sheaf 'B' to increase their lead was possible as they took on the Goldn Lion. The singles started well with only M.Emes of the Lion taking a frame as the Sheaf 'B' once again dominated the singles 7-1, but once again they seem to be able to find the bar with ease before the doubles. The doubles Andy Livermore and Lee Hall take a frame for the Sheaf 'B' as the game ended 8-4.
Engine Inn v Croft - The Croft took the trip out to the Engine and Chris Worrallmust of enjoyed the trip as he opened up the singles for the Croft with an 8 Ball Clearance, the Croft went on to lead at the end of the singles 5-3. The doubles saw the Engine put a good comeback as they took all 4 frames and the match 7-5.
Howards v Halsetown Inn - The Howards who have had a really up and down season welcomed the Halsetown and set about beating them up in the singles as they roared to a 7-1 lead with only Danny Hogg of the Halsetown taking a frame. The doubles didn't get any better for the Halsetown as they lost 3 out of 4 frames to the Howards who took the match 10-2.
Lifeboat Inn v Queens Hotel - Once again on their travels the Queens have found it hard a real home table team, they started well taking 3 out of 4 frames to lead 3-1. After that thought the Lifeboat got stuck in and took all the remaining frames to win the match 9-3.
Pool Club 'A' v Cornish Arms - In a tight and tense game the Cornish and the Pool Club 'A' fought out the singles as the match went one way then another until the singles ended up 4-4 with everything still to play for. Then KAPOOOOOW in the old Batman way the Pool 'A' struck taking one frame BIFFO after another frame SPLAT with no reply from the Cornish until 4 frames later the Cornish suffered only their second League defeat of the season 8-4. The Cornish have dropped 20 points out of a possible 36 in the last 3 weeks...... the wheels seem to have really come off their wagon !!!!!!!!
Sazbah v Rugby Club - With the drama unfolding on the Harbour front the Rugby Club had the opportunity to take advantage in Fore Street against the Sazbah, and at the end of the singles found themselves leading 6-2. The doubles saw the Sazbah fair slightly betters as they managed to share the frames 2-2 but that was enough for the Rugby Club to win 8-4 and open up a 5 point lead at the top of the table .......... Game On !!!!
British Legion v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - With the 'B' team winning 8-4 the Sheaf 'A' needed a good result to keep in touch with the Sheaf 'A' and at the end of the singles they were leading the Legion 5-3, maybe this had something to do with former captain Paul McQuilliam returning for a guest appearance either way a good result against the Legion. The doubles got even better for the Sheaf 'A' as they took the first 3 frame with only Mark Williams and Steve Mawdsley winng for the Legion the Sheaf 'A' took the match 8-4 ........ Game On again !!!!!!
Performance of the Week - Pool Club 'A'
Thursday 26th February 2009 - Week 22
After last week the Rugby Club managed to close the gap at the top to make the run in very interesting. The individual competitions are taking shape nicely now and with only 8 weeks left to play several players are in with a chance of winning....
Golden Lion v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - With the Sheaf 'A' struggling of late and falling further behind the Sheaf 'B' side they needed a result or two, things didn't start too well as Charlotte Penaluna of the Lion won the first frame but this proved to be the only singles frame the Lion would win. With the Sheaf 'A' winning 7-1 they started the doubles and carried on their good form to take all 4 frames and win 11-1.... but I fear this still isn't enough to reel in the Sheaf 'B'.
Rugby Club v British Legion - The Rugby Club came up against the side that helped them out last week, the British Legion wanting to avoid the same fate as the Cornish. In a closely contested 8 singles frames the teams found themselves level at 4-4 and with neither team holding an advantage the doubles started. The doubles though saw the Rugby Club make their move as they took all 4 frames and the match 8-4.
Cornish Arms v Sazbah - The Cornish entertained the Sazbah and with the Rugby Club playing the Legion they must of fancied their chances of putting some daylight between themselves and the Rugby Club. Things didn't start too well for the Cornish as they found themselves 2-0 down, and by the end of the singles the two sides found themselves level. The doubles saw the sides locked together and share the frames 2-2 meaning a second 6-6 draw for the Cornish and advantage to the Rugby Club.
Queens Hotel v Pool Club 'A' - The Pool 'A' have been in good form lately but found themselves 3-1 down before turning it around to level 4-4 at theend of the singles. The doubles saw the sides share the frames and draw the match 6-6.
Halsetown Inn v 3 Ferrets - In a bottom of the table scrap the Ferrets travelled to the Halsetown and had to win the last 3 singles frames to level 4-4 going into the doubles. The doubles saw the sides share the frames and the match 6-6.
Croft v Howards - Normally a close game between 2 sides that finish in the top half of the table, at the end of the singles the Croft held a slender 5-3 lead. The doubles saw the Howards win the first frame before the Croft took the next 3 and the match 8-4.
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Engine Inn - In a game that saw the majority of the luck go to the Engine the Sheaf 'B' fought their way to a 5-3 lead at the end of the singles hoping that the doubles would be kinder to them. After the major exertions of the Singles and being a couple of players down the Sheaf 'B' managed to only take 1 frame in the doubles but it was finished in a fair bit of style by Matt Hickenbottom, but the match ended 6-6.(Still enough to keep them ahead of the Sheaf 'A' in the house rivalry)
Performance of the Week - Sazbah
Thursday 19th February 2009 - Week 21
With it being Half Term week the opportunity for a lay in increases the chances of a thursday night drunken encounter and there were certainly one or two of those from the reports I've heard.
Engine Inn v Golden Lion - The Lion took the long ride out to the Engine and probably wish they hadn't bothered , as Rufus Harbud was the only Lion player to win a singles frame as they crashed to a 7-1 singles loss against the Engine. The doubles saw them fair as badly as the Engine won 3 out of 4 frames to end the match very convincing 10-2 winners.
Howards v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - In a very tight game the singles were shared 4-4 with each frame going against the break in a strange twist. All the games in the singles were close and very competitive and neither side could take an advantage the doubles though saw the Sheaf 'B' take control as they took the first 3 frames and secure the game 7-5, the Dorrington effect seems to still be working !!!!!
3 Ferrets v Croft - Match Postponed.
Lifeboat Inn v Halsetown Inn - In a game that saw the Halsetown start well by winning the first 2 frames the singles ended up with the teams sharing the frames 4-4. The doubles though saw the Lifeboat really take control as they took all 4 doubles frames to end the match 8-4 winners.
Sazbah v Queens Hotel - The Queens playing the Sazbah found themselves trailling 5-3 at the end of the singles something that is a regular occurence as they have only won 2 away games all season. The doubles just made things worse as the Sazbah won the first 3 frames to win the match 8-4.
British Legion v Cornish Arms - With the Rugby Club playing the Sheaf 'A' the Cornish needed a good result to keep their lead at the top of the table and they started well against the Legion. They found themselves 6-0 up in the singles until Dave Parks stopped the rot and Aaron Andrews took the last frame to make it 6-2 to the Cornish and the prospect of a good win on the horizon the doubles started. The Legion took the first frame in the doubles and then the 2nd and the 3rd with Dave Evans and Dave Parks playing the last frame they needed a win to complete a quite remarkable comeback by the Legion. They took the last frame and drew the match 6-6 taking the last 6 frames in the game, this after the Cornish took the first 6, talk about a game of 2 halves !!!!!
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Rugby Club - With the Cornish struggling against the Legion the Rugby Club had a chance to close the gap at the top again, they started well and after the singles found themselves leading 6-2 the same as the Cornish. The difference came with the doubles though as the Rugby Club took all 4 frames to secure an impressive 10-2 victory against the Sheaf 'A' and close the gap at the top to 1 point again.
Performance of the week - British Legion
Thursday 12th February 2009 - Week 20
With two thirds of the season gone we enter the final stretch kidneys and Livers are now well warmed up and ready for the final onslaught. With the Cornish and Rugby Club clear at the top its looking like a 2 horse race but you never know anything could happen in the next 10 weeks and with the Knockout competitions starting soon theres still alot of Pool to be played.
Golden Lion v Rugby Club - After last week the Rugby Club now find themselves sligthy adrift of the Cornish and a good win would be just the tonic and the chance to claw back some points. Enter the Lion and a 6-2 lead in the singles and the Rugby Club were looking good for the tonic they needed. The doubles saw them put the icing on the cake by taking 3 of 4 frames to win the match 9-3.
Cornish Arms v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - With a gap opening at the top the Cornish need to hold their nerve and keep the wins coming over the following weeks, but a game against the Sheaf 'A' isn't the easiest of fixtures and it started badly for the Cornish in the singles as they trailed 3-1. Then they found their form and only dropped one more frame in the remaining 8 to take the match 8-4 and keep the pressure on the Rugby Club.
Queens Hotel v British Legion - With the Legion still thinking about catching the top two they needed a good result aginst the Queens who have managed to engineer themselves some good results at home. The Legion though didn't show any mercy in the singles as they romped to a 6-2 lead before taking their foot off the pedal in the doubles and sharing the frames 2-2, but this was enough to give them a 8-4 win and some hope.
Halsetown Inn v Pool Club 'A' - Game Abandoned due to player failure.
Croft v Lifeboat Inn - A game that the Croft would of liked the look of with the Lifeboat not travelling too well recently, but with 2 frames left to play in the singles the Croft trailed 4-2 but they dug deep and the singles finished 4-4. The doubles saw the Croft show no mercy and take all 4 frames to end the match 8-4 winners, quite a popular score this week.
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v 3 Ferrets - In recent weeks the Sheaf 'B' have been missing Richard Dorrington from their starting line up which some might say is a good thing, but the stats are now showing that since his exile the Sheaf 'B' hasn't lost a match... coincidence or just a conspiracy theory ? The game against the 3 Ferrets only added to this stat as the Sheaf 'B' led 5-3 at the end of the singles and went on to share the doubles frames to win 7-5. I must just add that the game against the Ferrets was one of the best if not the best night that has been had so far this season and would like to thank them for a really good night all round.
Engine Inn v Howards - An interesting game this week as the Howards visited the Engine with the Engine's ex Captain and team dynamo who recently jumped ship. After the first 4 frames he might of thought he had made a mistake as the Engine led 3-1 with himself being one of their victims but the Howards dug deep and at the end of the singles they had pulled it back to 4-4. The doubles saw a keenly fought contest as the teams shared the frames but again the ex Captain couldn't make an impact and the match finished 6-6.
Performance of the Week - Engine Inn
Thursday 5th February 2009 - Week 19
This week could very well settle the League Title with the Rugby Club playing host to the Cornish Arms and if one of them could get a decent result then ......
Howards v Golden Lion - The Lion took atrip to Carnis Bay to play the Howards and found themselves 5-3 down at the end of the singles. The doubles proved to be worse for the Lion and the Howards took all 4 frames to make it a healthy 9-3 win.
3 Ferrets v Engine Inn - With the demise of the Engine Inn being reported the Ferrets should of had it easy but they found the Engine alive and kicking and taking the singles 5-3. The Doubles saw the Ferrets take control as the Engine ran out of steam (sorry for the pun) and lost all 4 frames for the Ferrets to turn it around and win 7-5.
Lifeboat Inn v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - Once again the Sheaf 'B' found themselves dominating the singles taking the Lifeboat apart and leading 6-2 at the end of the singles. But once again they found the bar and only Lee Garbett and Andy Livermore managed a doubles frame as the Sheaf 'B' scraped home 7-5.
Pool Club 'A' v Croft - Waiting for Mr D.....
Sazbah v Halsetown Inn - The Sazbah welcomed the Halsetown and quickly raced to a 5-0 lead in the singles ending up 6-2 leaders at the end of the singles frames. The Doubles saw the teams share the frames and the Sazbah take the match 8-4.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Queens Hotel - The Queens came to the Sheaf and started well and holding onto their advantage until the end of the singles where they led 5-3. The doubles saw the Sheaf 'B' find their form and fight back taking all 4 doubles frames to take the match 7-5.
Rugby Club v Cornish Arms - In the big clash of the week and probably the season the Rugby Club entertained the Cornish with all to play for and started well taking the first 2 frames. But the Cornish then took control winning 5 out of the next 6 frames to lead 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Cornish take a strangle hold on proceedings as the won 3 out of the 4 frames and took the match 8-4 to move 6 points in front of the Rugby Club.
Performance of the Week - Cornish Arms
Thursday 29th January 2009 - Week 18
Another week and another round of results which saw the top two cement their place at the top. It also sees some interesting names coming to the top in the individual competitions, names that have not featured in recent years. This season is becoming quite interesting all round.........
Golden Lion v Cornish Arms - After last weeks good work the Cornish were looking to keep the pressure up at the top. The Lion offered little resistance in the in the singles with only Andy Killick taking a frame for the Lion as the Cornish took control 7-1with Andy Peters making an 8 ball clearance, the doubles proved to be the same as the Cornish took 3 out of 4 frames to win the match 10-2.
Rugby Club v Queens Hotel - With the Cornish Arms winning the Rugby Club needed a good result to keep up and in touch, things didn't start well for the Rugby Club as the found themselves trailing 3-1 but then they found their form and took the next 4 frames to lead 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw them take all 4 frames to finish the match 9-3 winners but losing a point to the Cornish.
Halsetown Inn v British Legion - With the teams above them winning the Legion needed a good result to have any chance of closing the gap, unfortunately only capt Steve Mawdsley and JC could manage a win in the singles as the Legion crashed to a 6-2 singles defeat. The doubles saw an improvement as they shared the frames 2-2 but the Halsetown walked away with an impresive 8-4 victory.
Croft v Sazbah - TBA
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Pool Club 'A' - In recent weeks the Sheaf 'B' are proving to be a tough nut to crack in the singles and the Pool 'A' found this the case again as the Sheaf 'B' eased their way into a 5-3 lead in the singles. In recent weeks the Sheaf 'B' doubles have been their downfall but not this week as they romped to a 4-0 doubles win to end the match with a very healthy 9-3 victory.
Engine Inn v Lifeboat Inn - Postponed due to floodlight failure, to be replayed.
Howards v 3 Ferrets - In a very one sided game the Howards won the singles 7-1 and carried their good form into doubles winning 3 out of 4 frames to end the match 10-2 winners.
Performance of the Week - Halsetown Inn
Thursday 22nd January 2009 - Week 17
Last week the Cornish had a bye and the Rugby Club took full advantage of the situation by winning 11-1 to go 10 points clear at the top. The Rugby Club must sit there this week and watch as they have their bye and the Cornish take on the Queens ........
3 Ferrets v Golden Lion - The Lion visited the Ferrets this week and found themselves trailing 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Ferrets really take control and win 3 out of the 4 frames to win the match 8-4 lifting them to the heady heights of 12th in the table.
Lifeboat Inn v Howards - The Lifeboat who in recent weeks have struggled for players managed to find 8 pretty decent ones that managed to draw 4-4 at the end of the singles but the doubles really saw them get it together as they took 3 out of 4 frames and won the match 7-5.
Pool Club 'A' v Engine Inn - TBA
Sazbah v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - The Sheaf 'B' visited the Sazbah and as seems to be the norm of late proceeded to decimate the singles winning 6 out of the 8 frames and looking good for a very heavy victory. Then as of late seem to have discovered the bar far too early and lost 3 out of the 4 doubles frames to sneak a 7-5 victory. I think more drinking practice is in order.
British Legion v Croft - In what is always a competitive clash the Legion started well to lead 3-0 and hold onto the advantage until the end of the singles where they led 5-3. The doubles saw them drive home the advantage as they took 3 out of the 4 frames to win the match 8-4 and stay on the tails of the top two.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Halsetown Inn - The Sheaf 'A' welcomed the Halsetown and they cheekily took the first frame but Martin Peters of the Sheaf then had an 8 Ball clearance and the Sheaf 'A' never looked back as they roared through the rest of the frames and took the match 11-1.
Cornish Arms v Queens Hotel - With the Rugby Club not playing the Cornish needed a good win and with only Tom Smith of the Queens winning a singles they where well on their wy as they led 7-1 going into the doubles. If they could take all 4 doubles they would go back top and they didn't disappoint winning the match 11-1 and returning back to the top of the table.
Performance of the Week - Sheaf of Wheat 'A'
Thursday 15th January 2009 - Week 16
With the Cornish Arms having a bye this week a chance for the Rugby Club to put some distance between themselves and the Cornish and for the Legion to get themselves right into contention.... let the fun begin !!!
Golden Lion v Quuens Hotel - The Queens who have surprised a few people this season with their results and also their tactics faced the long trip down the High Street to play the Lion, and they must of travelled well as they found themselves leading 5-3 at the end of the singles. The Doubles saw the Queens take the last 3 frames to make a comfortable 8-4 win for themselves.
Halsetown Inn v Rugby Club - With the Cornish Arms taking their bye this week the Rugby Club took the long trip out to the Halsetown Inn and set about buisness, and with only Sam Terry winning for the Halsetown in the singles it was good buisness indeed. The doubles saw them really seal the deal by taking all 4 frames and the match 11-1, taking them 10 points clear of the Cornish but having played 1 game more !!!!
Croft v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - With a good win the Croft could pull themselves back into the shake up but a visit from the Sheaf 'A' soon put paid to that as the singles saw the Sheaf 'A' lead 5-3, The doubles saw the frames split between the sides and the Sheaf 'A' take the match 7-5.
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v British Legion - With the Cornish not playing the Legion had a chance to steal second place in the league with a trip to the Sheaf 'B', unfortunately the Sheaf 'B' hadn't read the script and set about dismantling the Legion in the singles 6-2. This dismantling did come with a smattering of good fortune but they say you make your own luck and shot of the night went to Capt Paul Beadnell for his excellent black in the singles, Richard Dorrington's replacement is also proving to be a bit handy as Tony Richards set the tone with his opening win in the singles. The doubles saw the Legion grit their teeth and fight back taking 3 out of the 4 frames but it wasn't enough as the Sheaf 'B' won the match 7-5.
Engine Inn v Sazbah - The earlier season cockiness from the Engine captain seems to be a distant memory now, but they started well in the singles and took a 5-3 lead into the doubles. The doubles though saw the Sazbah put an a remarkable comeback by taking all 4 frames and the match 7-5.
Howards v Pool Club 'A' - The Pool 'A' have been the surprise package so far this season and the last couple of weeks has seen them rocket to the nosebleed position of 5th in the League but they found it hard going against the Howards and at the end of the singles the teams were all square at 4 a piece. The Doubles saw the Howards finally take control of the match winning 3 out of 4 frames to win the game 7-5.
3 Ferrets v Lifeboat Inn - TBA
Performance of the Week - Sazbah
Thursday 8th January 2009 - Week 15
Well after all the extra training being done at Crimbo the restart of the season was eagerly anticipated, with the Rugby Club at the top the rest of the chasing pack were steeling themselves for the long run in, and wit all still to play for it could be anyones title this year........
Lifeboat Inn v Golden Lion - Both teams seem to have benefited from the Crimbo break as they foght their way to a 4-4 draw at the end of the singles, but the Lifeboat inn were just kidding and turned on a major assualt in the doubles taking all 4 frames and the match 8-4.
3 Ferrets v Pool Club 'A' - The Pool 'A' are a strange bunch and so so so unpredictable but this week the invicibles turned up and they raced to a 7-1 lead in the singles, the doubles saw them take 3 out of the 4 frames to win the match 10-2 .... nothing more to be said really !!!!
Howards v Sazbah - The Sazbah started well winning 3 out of the first 4 frames to lead 3-1 but then Duncan Halliday rattled in an eight ball to inspire a comback which saw the Howards leading 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles also saw a big improvement from the Howards as they won 3 out of 4 frames to take the match 8-4.
Engine Inn v British Legion - An away game at the Engine isn't everyones cup of tea but the Legion seem to enjoy it as they stormed to a 7-1 lead with only R.Garbutt of the Engine taking a frame for the home side in the singles. The doubles also saw the Engine take 1 frame as the Legion demolished them 10-2 a very impressive win indeed !!!!!
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - The only A versus B game left now and what a game, with pub pride at stake both sides wanted to take the honours and squared up like 2 heavyweights and traded blows. first one then the other but neither team cracked and even heavy barracking of their own players was proving useless. The singles ended 4-4 and so onto the doubles and as in the singles blows were traded and the final game came with the Sheaf 'A' leading 6-5..... Andy Livermore and Lee Garbett fought and scrapped their way to a truly awe inspiring frame win (well they won anyway !!!!) to end the match in a 6-6 draw and pub pride and honour was left even and intact !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Croft v Rugby Club - After spending Crimbo at No1 the Rugby Club visited the Croft and found themselves still full of the Christmas cheer and before they knew it found themselves trailing 4-0, captain Ricky Chilton managed to stop the rot and by the end of the singles the Croft led 5-3. The doubles saw the Croft extend their lead by taking the first doubles frame but the Rugby Club fought back taking the last 3 frames to draw the match 6-6.
Halsetown Inn v Cornish Arms - With the Rugby Club only drawing there was a chance for the Cornish Arms to close the gap at the top, and close it they did with only one frame for the Halsetown Inn in the singles the Cornish Arms already had 7 frames in the bag with the doubles to play. The doubles though saw the Halsetown have a mini fight back as they took the first 2 frames before the Cornish took the remaining frames to make it 9-3 and topple the Rugby Club from the top of the table.
Performance of the Week - British Legion & Pool Club 'A' Joint

Queens Hotel v Halsetown Inn - The Queens who have been consistent so far this season carried on their good form as they found themselves 6-2 up at the end of the single. The doubles also saw the Queens carry on their good form as they took 3 out of 4 doubles frames against the Halsetown to win the match 9-3.
Cornish Arms v Croft - Always a good match between these 2 and with the added spice of the Cornish looking to be top of the table at Christmas there was all to play for, with the Croft taking an early lead the Cornish did well to claw back to be drawing at 4-4 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw both teams take 2 frames to end the match 6-6 and not enough for the Cornish to be Christmas No1.
Rugby Club v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - With the Cornish playing the Croft the Rugby Club were looking to keep their advantage at the top for Christmas but found themselves 5-3 down at the end of the singles as the Sheaf 'B' played well in the singles. The doubles though proved to be a different story as the Rugby Club found their form and took all 4 frames and the match 7-5 to retain their place at the top at Christmas.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Engine Inn - The Engine came to the Sheaf 'A' and at the end of the singles in atight game they found themselves drawing 4-4. The doubles again proved to be their downfall as the Sheaf 'A' took control of the match and all 4 frames winning 8-4.
British Legion v Howards - The Howards came to the Legion and set about the singles winning 5 out of the 8 frames to lead 5-3 at the break. The Legion had to dig deep and take 3 out of the 4 frames to ensure a draw against the unpredictable Howards.
Sazbah v 3 Ferrets - The Ferrets started well taking 2 of the first 3 frames but the the Sazbah mopped up the rest to lead 6-2 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Sazbah carry on their good form and took all 4 frames to end the match 10-2 winners, their biggest win so far in their first season.
Pool Club 'A' v Lifeboat Inn - The Pool 'A' have been the most surprising team this yaer and have been in really good form recently and this game was no different, at the end of the singles they were 5-3 up. The doubles saw the Pool 'A' take 3 out of the 4 frames to win the match 8-4 and end the year on a high.
Performance of the Week - Sazbah
Thursday 11th December 2008 - Week 13
With the top 2 teams the only ones with a realistic chance of being the Christmas No1 it was all to play for. The Rugby Club and Cornish both looking for a good result to set them up for the final week....
Pool Club 'A' v Golden Lion - The unpredictable Pool 'A' hosted the Lion but seem to have forgotten their Xmas spirit as them pummled the Lion taking the singles 7-1 with only Edda Probst of the Lion winning a singles. The doubles proved to be much of the same as the Pool 'A' took all 4 doubles to take the match 11-1, the memeber of the 11-1 club for the Pool 'A' shall remain nameless.
Lifeboat Inn v Sazbah - A close game this one between 2 evenly matched sides which saw the Lifeboat just edge the singles 5-3, the doubles saw the Sazbah even it up by taking 3 out of 4 doubles to end the match 6-6.
3 Ferrets v British Legion - The Legion have stumbled through the first 13 games this season and have now found themselves in the top 3 and after losing the first frame went on to take the singles 6-2. The doubles saw them improve again as they took al 4 doubles frames to win the match 10-2.
Howards v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - A close game again with both sides trading frames in the singles and ending up 4-4 going into the doubles.the doubles saw the match stay close but once again the teams split the frames and drew the match 6-6.
Engine Inn v Rugby Club - The Rugby Club needed a good result to keep them in first spot and started well by winning the first 4 singles frames but the Engine then found their form and promptly took the next 4 to end the singles 4-4. The doubles saw the Rugby Club take the first frame but the Engine countered and took the next 2 meaning that Ricky Chilton and Jonathon Peters needed to win to save the match, this they did and the match ended in a 6-6 draw.
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Cornish Arms - With the Rugby Club drawing the Cornish had a chance to take advantage and set about taking the singles 6-2 against the Sheaf 'B'. With 4 frames to play for in the doubles the Cornish were looking to take their advantage form the singles and build on it but the Sheaf 'B' were having none of it and took 3 out of the 4 frames to limit the Cornish to a 7-5 victory.
Croft v Queens Hotel - The Croft started well and by the end of the singles found themselves leading 5-3, the doubles saw the teams split the frames and end the match in a 7-5 win to the Croft.

Golden Lion v Halsetown Inn - The recently improved Halsetown visited the Lion and kept their good singles form going to find themselves leading 5-3 going into the doubles. The doubles saw the Lion improve and fight back to take 3 out of 4 frames to salvage a 6-6 draw.
Queens Hotel v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - Always a fiercely competitive game this one that saw both teams fighting for every frame with the Queens having the lions share off the luck but the Sheaf 'B' dug deep and managed to keep the score level at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Queens go 6-5 up with one to play and with tensions running high the Queens took the last frame after a controversial desicion by the ref.
Cornish Arms v Engine Inn - The Cornish laying second in the league started well and found themselves leading 6-2 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Engine put up more of a fight as they shared the frames but this was only enough to keep the Cornish to a 8-4 victory.
Rugby Club v Howards - With the Cornish winning the Rugby Club needed a good result to stay top, at the end of the singles the Rugby Club were leading 5-3. The doubles saw the in form Rugby club take the game by winning 3 out of 4 frames to secure a 8-4 win and match the Cornish to stay top.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v 3 Ferrets - The out of form Sheaf 'A' put their recent troubles behind them as the stormed through the singles to lead 7-1 with only captain Stuart Kennerley winning for the 3 Ferrets. Performance of the Week - Sheaf of Wheat 'A'
Thursday 27th November 2008 - Week 11
After the last couple of weeks with the Pool 'B' dropping out of the league things have calmed down again and things are getting back to normal. This week saw some good games and some good wins making the top of the table look interesting....
Sazbah v Golden Lion - This seasons new comers the Sazbah are starting to find their feet and found themselves leading 5-3 against the Lion going into doubles. The doubles saw them increase the pressure and take 3 out of the 4 frames to win the match 8-4.
Pool Club 'A' v British Legion - The recent form of the Legion team has been good but they found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-2 loss in the singles against the Pool 'A'. The doubles saw the Legion improve slightly as they split the frames with the Pool 'A' but this was only good enough to see the Pool 'A' take an impressive 8-4 victory, and just a note for our Aussie readers Mr Duffy won his first singles frame this season quite an achievement !!!
3 Ferrets v Rugby Club - League leadets the Rugby Club visited the Ferrets and set about keeping the pressure on at the top by taking the singles 6-2. The doubles saw them keep the pressure up by taking 3 out of 4 frames and the match 9-3.

Performance of the Week - Pool Club 'A'
Thursday 20th November 2008 - Week 10
After the sad demise of the Pool Club 'B' last week most of the remaining gladiators took to the Bars and Inns to battle onward. The race for the Christmas No1 is now hotting up with only 4 weeks left to play the Rugby Club still holds a slight advantage on the Cornish Arms with the Croft and Legion within striking distance.
Golden Lion v Croft - The Croft started well going 3-0 up in the early exchanges an advantage they held onto to lead at the end of the singles 5-3. They continued to push home their advantage by winning the first 2 doubles but the Lion found some form to take the last 2 frames and stop a runaway victory for the Croft, who managed a 7-5 win after much promise.
Halsetown Inn v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - After inflicting the first defeat on the Croft last week the Sheaf 'B' were in buoyant mood against the Halsetown, but alas as is the way most weeks with the Sheaf 'B' the wheels promptly fell off and they found themselves down by 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles started badly for them too as the Halsetown took the first frame but finally things clicked and the Sheaf 'B' took the last 3 frames to draw the match 6-6.
Queens Hotel v Howards - TBA (No result Sheet)
Cornish Arms v 3 Ferrets - With the smell of blood in their nostrils after last weeks 11-1 feast on the Lifeboat the Cornish welcomed the 3 Ferrets hoping for more of the same, and although not quite as ruthless they found themselves 6-2 up at the end of the singles which included a good win for Stuart Kennerley of the Ferrets against the in form Richard Astle. The doubles also proved to be good hunting for the Cornish as they took 3 of the 4 frames to win the match 9-3.
Rugby Club v Lifeboat Inn - Due to circumstances beyond their control the Lifeboat couldn't field a team, so the match was postponed.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Pool Club 'A' - In a hard fought arena of skill, sweat and toil the sheaf 'A' and Pool 'A' fought out a draw in the singles frames with neither side being able to take advantage. The doubles though saw the Pool 'A' make a run for the line as they took the first 3 doubles frames to snatch the match 7-5.
British Legion v Sazbah - The Legion in recent weeks have been a bit unpredictable but at home they made no mistake against this years new boys the Sazbah as they raced to a confident 6-2 lead at the end of the singles. The doubles reinforced their position as they took 3 out of the 4 frames to take the match 9-3 and keep themselve within striking distance of the 3 teams above them.
Performance of the Week - Cornish Arms
Thursday 13th November 2008 - Week 9
Well this ones a wee bit late going up so less of the chatter and on with it......
British Legion v Golden Lion - With the Legion having home advantage this looked like a forgone conclusion but it turned out to be an interesting game, the Legion strolled their way through the singles to lead 6-2 going into the doubles and a short hop away from a handsome victory. The Lion on the other hand had different ideas and proceeded to take the first 3 doubles frames to make the score 6-5 but Steve Mawdsley and Mark Williams managed to drag the Legion across the line to secure a 7-5 victory.
Sazbah v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - In a close game the Sheaf 'A' started well winning the first 2 frames but then managed to lose the next 4 before digging deep once again to level 4-4 at the end of the singles. The doubles proved an easier prospect for the Sheaf 'A' who took the last 3 frames to end the match 7-5 winners.
Pool Club 'A' v Rugby Club - The Pool 'A' found themselves on the wrong end of a absolute Rugby Club onslaught as they battered their way to a 8-0 lead at the end of the singles. After regrouping for the doubles the Pool 'A' put up a decent fight taking the first 3 doubles frames to end the match 9-3 losers to Rugby Club.
Lifeboat Inn v Cornish Arms - As their nearest rivals all won the Cornish Arms had to keep up the pressure at the top and against the Lifeboat took all 8 singles frames to go into the doubles looking for the big result. The doubles proved to be a good hunting ground as they took 3 out of the 4 frames to win the match 11-1 and pile on the pressure at the top.
3 Ferrets v Queens Hotel - In a local derby of a game there was little to choose betwwen the 2 sides as the slogged out a 4-4 draw in the singles. The doubles proved to be the same sort of thing as they split the frames and drew the match 6-6.
Engine Inn v Halsetown Inn - In the out of town derby the Halsetown visited the Engine and made a good fight of the singles and found themselves level at 4 a piece going into the doubles. The doubles saw the Engine find their recent good form and take 3 out of 4 frames to win a close game 7-5.
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Croft - The Sheaf 'B' hosted the Croft and started well by taking the first 3 frames an advantage they held onto until the end of the singles as they led 5-3 going into the doubles. The doubles proved to be too much for the Croft as the Sheaf 'B' took 3 out of the 4 frames to end the Crofts unbeaten record with an impressive 8-4 win which was celebrated with much delight and booze, as is the way with the Sheaf 'B'.
Performance of the Week - Sheaf of Wheat 'B'
Thursday 6th November 2008 - Week 8
After another week of frantic action we still have our unbeaten players in both competitions and it's really starting to hot up at the top of the table. The long run in for the Christmas number one has started ......
Golden Lion v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - In a game that promised so much came so very little neither side could take any advantage as the singles trundled to a 4-4 draw. The doubles went pretty much the same way until the last frame when Edda Probst and captain Ruth O'Shea of the Lion played well to take the match 7-5.
Croft v Engine Inn - The Engine Inn who have been tipped this year by one or two people, well mainly their captain Trevor, have found it hard over the last few weeks and this game proved to be the same. With only B.Mellors of the Engine winning in the singles the Engine trailed the Croft 7-1 going into the doubles. With a slight improvement by the Engine in the doubles the score finished with the croft winning 9-3.
Halsetown Inn v Howards - TBA
Pool Club 'B' v 3 Ferrets - The Ferrets this year seem have found something extra or maybe lost the way to the bar as they scrapped their way to a 4-4 draw in the singles against the Pool 'B'. In the doubles it looks like the bar was found again as they collapsed and lost all 4 frames to end the match losing 8-4 to the Pool Club 'B'
Queens Hotel v Lifeboat Inn - In another close encounter the Queens managed to sneek the advantage in the singles and lead 5-3 going into the doubles against the Lifeboat. The Doubles proved to be an easier task for the Queens as they took 3 out of 4 frames to win the match 8-4.
Cornish Arms v Pool Club 'A' - Last years runners up the Cornish hosted the Pool Club 'A' and set to work, by the end of the singles they found themselves leading 6-2. The doubles proved to be the turning point as the Pool 'A' fought back taking 3 out of the 4 frames including an 8 Ball Clearance by Lee Tacagni to make the match score 7-5 to the Cornish.
Rugby Club v Sazbah - This year the high flying Rugby Club seem to be determined to stay at the top of the table as they found themselves 7-1 up against the Sazbah. The doubles saw them push home the advantage by taking all but the last frame to win 10-2.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v British Legion - All I can say about this game having witnessed some of the play is wow what a performance by the Legion, they had some luck on the way but ended the game with a 12-0 win over the Sheaf 'A'. The first 12-0 of the season so far which propels them to 4th spot only 2 points behind leaders the Rugby Club.
Performance of the Week - British Legion
Thursday 30th October 2008 - Week 7
Another week of top quality Pool and the table is starting to take a familiar shape with the usual contenders starting to rise to the top spots. This week saw a clash between two of last years high flyers the British Legion and Rugby Club and once again a strange result which you wouldn't of guessed !!!! We are also down to 1 unbeaten player in both the singles and doubles competitions in the singles Richard Astle (Cornish Arms) and the Doubles Robert Rowe (Rugby Club)
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Golden Lion - A competitive game saw the back order of the Sheaf 'A' gain them an advantage as they won 3 out of the last 4 frames in the singles to take a slim 5-3 lead into the doubles. The doubles also proved to be very close as the teams shared the frames 2-2 to see the Sheaf 'A' take the match 7-5.
British Legion v Rugby Club - In the game of the week the Rugby Club visited the Legion and found them in cracking form as they roared to a 7-1 lead in the singles with only Simon Pollard of the Rugby Club winning in the singles. The doubles proved a different story as the Rugby Club dug deep and took 3 out of the 4 frames to end the match with an impressive 8-4 win for the Legion.
Sazbah v Cornish Arms - The Cornish travelled to this years new boys and found it hard going in the singles only managing to lead at the end of the singles 5-3. The doubles saw the Sazbah take the first frame but the Cornish Arms then showed their form and took the last 3 frames to win the match 8-4.
Pool Club 'A' v Queens Hotel - With the results being monitored from Botany Bay by ex captain Dirk Lengton, the Pool 'A' put on a good show in the singles with only Matt Harry of the Lion winning as the Pool 'A' stormed to a 7-1 lead before the doubles. The doubles proved to be a different story as the Lion dug deep and countered by taking 3 out of 4 frames seeing the match with a Pool 'A' 8-4 win.
Lifeboat Inn v Pool Club 'B' - Another very close game that saw the Lifeboat take 3 out of the last 4 singles frames to take a slender lead into the doubles of 5-3. The doubles saw a good performance from the Lifeboat who won 3 out of 4 frame sto take the match 8-4.
3 Ferrets v Halsetown Inn - The bottom of the table Halsetown travelled to the Ferrets and found themselves 5-3 up at the end of the singles a position they have rarely found themselves in this season. The doubles proved to be even better for the Halsetown as they took 3 out of 4 frames to take the match 8-4, their first win of the season.
Howards v Croft - A game between 2 teams fighting to be in the mix at the top of the table saw the Croft get the better of the singles as the took a solid 6-2 lead, a good performance agianst the Howards. The doubles saw the Croft take the first frame to secure the match but couldn't push on as the Howards took the last 3 to make it a close 7-5 win for the Croft.
Engine Inn v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - A very close game this one with both teams taking frames to make it 4-4 at the end of the singles and with everything to play for in the doubles the raffle was drawn. The Sheaf 'B' cleared up in the Raflle taking all 3 prizes but alas couldn't do the same in the doubles as the frames were shared and the match drawn 6-6.
Performance of the Week - Halsetown Inn
Thursday 23rd October 2008 - Week 6
Another week of big matches and the top of the table with the lead changing each week, this year is turning into a very competitive season so far...............
Golden Lion v Engine Inn - The Engine visited the Lion with a hope in their hearts being only 2 points off the top of the table. The game started well for the Engine as they found themselve 3-1 up and by the end of the singles still held the advantage 5-3 before the doubles. The doubles saw the Lion fight back and take 3 out of the 4 frames to end the match 6-6.
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Howards - The league leading Howards found themselves 6-2 down at the end of the singles as the inconsistent Sheaf 'B' roared their way through the singles. The doubles saw the Sheaf 'B' have a mini collapse and the Howards won all 4 frames to earn themselves a 6-6 draw.

Cornish Arms v British Legion - Two of last years top teams met and saw the Cornish roar to a 6-0 lead over the Legion before the Legion managed to take the last 2 frames to make it 6-2 to the Cornish at the end of the Singles. The doubles saw the Legion fair a bit better as they split the frames 2-2 but this only meant the Cornish won 8-4.
Rugby Club v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - The Rugby Club who have had a good start to this season continued their good form against the Sheaf 'A' by taking the singles 6-2 including an 8 Ball clearance by Ricky Chilton. Performance of the Week - Rugby Club
Thursday 16th October 2008 - Week 5
Well this year is proving to be a well fought competition so far with some very close games, most games are only being won by the odd frame and from some of the frames I've seen they are very odd !!!
Rugby Club v Golden Lion - The Lion started well taking the first frame but then the Rugby Club turned it on taking 5 out of the next 6 to finish the singles 6-2 up. the doubles proved to be a little more even with the teams sharing the frames 2-2 to see the Rugby Club taking the match 8-4.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Cornish Arms - The Sheaf 'A' got of to a good start but found themselves 4-1 down after the first 5 frames but then rallied slightly to finish the singles 5-3 down with everything still to play for in the doubles. The doubles saw the Cornish take the first 2 frames to secure the match but couldn't force home the advantage as the Sheaf 'A' rallied again to take the last 2 to make a 7-5 win for the Cornish. The match also saw two 8 Ball clearances one for Jeremy Gaylard of the Cornish in the singles and one for Steve Davies of the Sheaf 'A' in the doubles.
British Legion v Queens Hotel - In a close game the Legion started by winning the first 2 frames but couldn't hold on to the advantage as the Queens battled back to be drawing 4-4 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Legion scrape home by winning 3 out of the 4 doubles to take the match 7-5.
Sazbah v Pool Club 'B' - In a game of 2 halves the Sazbah found themselves 3-1 up after the first 4 frames only for the Pool 'B' to win 3 out of the 4 remaing frames to level it up 4-4 at the end of the singles. Again in a close game the Pool 'b' scraped home by taking 3 out the 4 doubles frames to win 7-5.
Pool Club 'A' v Halsetown Inn - TBA (Mr Duffy forgotten the sheets again)
Lifeboat Inn v Croft - The Croft found it hard going in the singles against the Lifeboat as they found themselves 5-3 down after the singles and staring defeat in the face. The doubles saw the Croft find their form as they took all 4 frames and the match 7-5.
3 Ferrets v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - The Sheaf 'B' started well against the Ferrets and after 4 frames lead 3-1 but Ferrets hit back and by the end of the singles the match was drawn 4-4. The doubles proved to be a different story as the Sheaf 'B' failed to win a frame and the Ferrets ran away with the match 8-4 taking 7 out of the last 8 frames in the singles and doubles.
Howards v Engine Inn - The Engine in good form visited the Howards and started well finding themselves 3-1 up but once again another team that couldn't keep the advantage as they found themselves level at the end of the singles. The Howards like the Ferrets then took all 4 frames in the doubles to finish the game 8-4 winners and send the Engine home licking their wounds.
Performance of the Week - 3 Ferrets
Thursday 9th October 2008 - Week 4
Sorry for the late report but I recieved a couple of sheets late and couldn't get all the updates done in time....anyway onto this week which saw the first clash of 2 of the more fancied sides for this season title. Last years Runners Up the Cornish Arms against the Rugby Club who finished 4th.
Golden Lion v Howards - A game which saw both sides fight out a very close and tight game, at the end of he singles you couldn't get a fag paper between them as they drew 4-4. The doubles proved to be the same as they shared the frames and finished the match 6-6, a score that has proved very popular for many teams so far this season.
Engine Inn v 3 Ferrets - The Ferrets took the long trip out to the Engine and must have forgotten how to play on the way as the Engine Inn chugged to a 6-0 lead before they encountered the phenomenem known as "Jimbo" who made it 6-1 but that was the only joy for the Ferrets. The doubles saw the Engine start well again taking the first 2 frames before the Ferrets rallied and took the final 2 frames to make it 9-3 to the Engine.
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Lifeboat Inn - The Lifeboat started well taking 5 out of the first 6 frames with only Captain Paul Beadnell winning for the Sheaf, the Sheaf then dug deep and took the last 2 frames to make it 5-3 to the Lifeboat at the end of the singles. The Sheaf then found their form and went on to take 3 out of the 4 doubles to draw the game 6-6.
Croft v Pool Club 'A' - The Croft started well taking the first 3 and held onto the advantage until the end of the singles and led 5-3 going into the doubles. The doubles saw the Pool 'A' improve and take 3 out of the 4 frames to draw the match 6-6..... theres a pattern forming this week.
Halsetown Inn v Sazbah - The Sazbah went away to the Halsetown and did well finding themselves leading 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw a complete collapse by the Sazbah as the Halsetown turned things around and took all 4 doubles to win the match 7-5, quite a comeback.
Pool Club 'B' v British Legion - The Pool 'B' started well taking the first 3 frames but the Legion then woke up and took the next 5 frames to lead 5-3 going into the doubles. The doubles saw the Legion carry on their good form taking the first 2 frames before the Pool 'A' took one but the Legion took the last to make it 8-4 to them.
Queens Hotel v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - The Sheaf visited the Queens and started well taking 3 out of 4 frames and held onto this advantage until the doubles leading 5-3. The doubles saw the frames split with the Sheaf 'A' finishing the game 7-5 winners.
Cornish Arms v Rugby Club - The Cornish started brightly taking the first 4 singles before the Rugby Club gained their composure and took 3 out of the last 4 frames to trail 5-3 going into the doubles. The doubles saw the Rugby Club excel themselves by taking all 4 frames to turn the game round and win 7-5, a magnificent effort to turn the game around.
Performance of the Week - Rugby Club
Thursday 2nd October 2008 - Week 3
So after 3 weeks things are settling down and the table is stating to take shape, although there are still some surprising results coming through.
Cornish Arms v Golden Lion - Last years runners up have started well and when the Lion visited they found them in good form, the Cornish took the first 4 frames before the Lion managed to register a win. By the end of the Singles the Cornish found themselves 6-2 ahead, the Doubles saw little change as the Cornish took 3 out of 4 frames to win the match 9-3.
Rugby Club v Queens Hotel - The Queens started well winning the first 2 frames but the Rugby Club then put together a run of 4 frames before the Queens took the next 2 to level 4-4 at the end of the Singles. The Doubles started the same as the Singles with the Queens winning the first 2 frames before the Rugby Club took the 3rd but the Queens pair of S.Richards and G.Carr held their nerve to take the last frame and the match 7-5.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Pool Club 'B' - Truly a game of 2 halves with the Sheaf 'A' stating the singles well by winning the first 2 frames before the Pool 'B' levelled with the next 2, then the Sheaf 'A' took the remaining frames to lead 6-2 at the end of the Singles. The doubles saw a complete shift as the Pool 'B' won all 4 frames in the doubles to pull back to a 6-6 draw.
British Legion v Halestown Inn - A game that started closely with the Legion taking the last 2 frames in the singles to lead 5-3 going into the doubles. With everything to play for in the doubles the Legion made their play and took all 4 frames to end the match with a 9-3 win.
Sazbah v Croft - This years newcomers played host to the Croft and found the going tough but managed to hold on to a in form Croft side and find themselves trailing only 5-3 at the end of the Singles. The doubles saw the Sazbah start well by winning the first 2 frames and bringing it back to 5-5 but the Croft then found some form and took the last 2 rames to win 7-5.
Pool Club 'A' v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - The Sheaf 'B' obviously forgot to turn up to the Pool Club at 8:30 as only Brian Ashwin managed to win a frame in the Singles as the Pool 'A' rocketed to a 7-1 lead before the doubles. By the start of the doubles the Sheaf 'B' had turned up or the other theory drunk enough and finally started to play and took 3 out of the 4 doubles frames to end up on the wrong side of a 8-4 win for the Pool 'A'.
Lifeboat Inn v Engine Inn - In a very close game between 2 evenly matched sides started with the Engine winning the first frame but then the Lifeboat won the next 2 and so on and so forth until it ended up 4-4 going into the doubles. The doubles saw the Engine win the first but the Lifeboat took the next 2 and the Engine had to win the last to salvage a draw, which they managed meaning the match ended in a 6-6 draw.
3 Ferrets v Howards - In a tight game the Ferrets found themselves leading 4-1 but couldn't hold on and ended up being 4-4 at the end of the singles. The Howards took the first doubles frame to lead for the first time in the match but the week 2 league leaders found themselves losing the last 3 frames and the match 7-5 to the Ferrets.
Performance of the Week - 3 Ferrets
Thursday 25th September 2008 - Week 2
After the excitement of the first week could it continue in week 2...... you bet it could !!!
Golden Lion v 3 Ferrets - The Ferrets visited the Lion and started well winning the first game but the Lion then rattled off the next 4 frames before the Ferrets rallied and took the next 3 to end the singles level at 4-4. The doubles started with the Ferrets taking the first 2 frames but the Lion dug deep to take the final 2 frames to leave the match a 6-6 draw.
Howards v Lifeboat Inn - The Lifeboat travelled out to the Howards this week but must of caught a bit of travel sickness as they failed to win a singles frame and found themselves 8-0 down at the end of the singles. The doubles didn't improve much as only Alex Garland and Ashley Shaw managed to win a frame for the Lifeboat as they crashed to an 11-1 defeat.
Engine Inn v Pool Club 'A' - The Engine didn't show much hospitality as they entertained the Pool Club 'A', the Engine took a 4-0 lead before the Pool 'A' managed to string a couple of frames together. This was a slight blip as they lost the next 2 frames to find themselves 6-2 down to the Engine at the end of the singles. The Doubles proved to be even worse for the Pool 'A' as they failed to take a frame meaning the Engine ended up with a comfortable 10-2 home win.
Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Sazbah - The Sazbah's first away game saw them visit the Sheaf 'B' and after the singles only Guggs for the Sazbah had won a frame, leaving the Sazbah 7-1 down in the Singles. The doubles saw the Sazbah rally a bit as they won the first 2 frames but the Sheaf 'B' soon regained their composure to win the last 2 frames and finish the game 9-3 winners.
Croft v British Legion - In a very competitive 8 singles frames neither team could take any advantage as they swapped frames with the Croft taking the last 3 frames to leave the sides level at 4-4. The doubles proved to be a bit different as the Croft stormed through taking all 4 frames to finish the game 8-4 victors.
Halsetown Inn v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - The Sheaf 'A' started quite well at the Halsetown but they had to win the last 2 frames to lead 5-3 at the end of the singles. The Halestown dug deep in the doubles and only Paul Hubbard and Karl Chambers of the Sheaf managed a win a frame as the Halsetown pulled it back to a 6-6 draw.
Pool Club 'B' v Rugby Club - The Pool 'B' took advantage of home table knowledge to take a narrow lead into the doubles by winning the first 2 and last 2 frames to lead 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles started well for the Pool 'B' as they took the first frame to go 6-3 up, but then the Rugby Club dug deep and took the last 3 frames to drag it back to a 6-6 draw.
Queens Hotel v Cornish - The Queens took the 1st frame against the Cornish but then found themselve 6-2 down at the end of the singles as only James Bishop could win another for the Queens. The Cornish then took the 1st doubles and it looked like they would go on to win by a large margin but the Queens then found their form and took the last 3 frames to finish the match with a 7-5 loss.
Performance of the Week - Howards
Thursday 18th September 2008 - Week 1
Ah well here we go again after a summer of untold and unrivalled sunshine we start our long journey of discovery through the winter. Enough of this rubbish the St Ives Pool League is back once again and I hope that everyone has enjoyed their eirst week's action.
Queens Hotel v Golden Lion - With a local derby to start this was going to be tough and the reformed Queens team started well by winning the first 2 frames before the Lion levelled things up 2-2, but then the Queens took control to win the next 4 frames and lead 6-2 at the end of the singles. The doubles proved to be a lot closer as the teams shared the frames to end the match with a first win for the Queens 8-4.
Cornish Arms v Pool Club 'B' - Last years runners up the Cornish started well taking a 4 frame lead before the Pool 'B' got to grips with the new season with Josh Chandler making it 4-1, but only Luke Goodchild managed another frame in the singles for the Pool 'A' who trailed 6-2 at the end of the singles. The doubles proved slightly better for the Pool 'A' as they managed to share the frames with the Cornish but all this meant was the Cornish ended up 8-4 winners.
Rugby Club v Halsetown Inn - The Rugby Club have had a change of captain this year with reigning Singles KO Champion Ricky Chilton taking control, and when Sam Narbett won the first for the Halsetown eyebrows were raised. As it happens the win by Sam proved to be the only one as the Rugby Club powered to an impressive first game win of 11-1, a nice start for new captain Ricky Chilton.
Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Croft - In a very close game the Sheaf 'A' just edged the singles 5-3 with an impressive win by in form hustler Michelle Sheils in the last frame of the singles and the first 8 ball of the season for Chris Worrall of the Croft in the first frame. The doubles looked like going the same way with the Sheaf 'A' taking the first frame before the Croft hit back and took the last 3 frames to level the match 6-6.
British Legion v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - The Sheaf 'B' started well and took the first but only Brian Ashwin and Simon Gill could add to this as the Legion finished the singles 5-3 up, and with Sheaf 'B' captain Paul Beadnell away tactics needed to be thought out carefully. Great team spirit got the Sheaf 'B' going again as they Stumbled their way through the first 3 doubles frames to take a 6-5 lead, but JC and Dave Venn of the Legion held their nerve to take the last and salvage a 6-6 draw for the Legion.
Sazbah v Engine Inn - The newly formed Sazbah team faced the Engine Inn for their first game and found the hot pace of the St Ives League tough in the singles as the Engine finished the Singles leading 5-3. The doubles proved to be a different prospect as the Sazbah soon got used to the opposition and dragged the game back to a final 6-6 draw.
Pool Club 'A' v Howards - after the first 4 frames the Howards found themselves 3-1 up with only Paul Clegg of the Pool 'A' taking a frame, but in a reverse in the second 4 frames only Richard Goldsmith of the Howards took a frame leavine the match 4-4 after the singles. The doubles saw the Pool 'A' take an early advantage but the Howards then found their feet and took the next 3 frames to secure a closely fought 7-5 victory.
Lifeboat Inn v 3 Ferrets - The Ferrets started well with Andy Morris taking the first frame but only Stuart Kennerley and Steve Taylor added to this and the Lifeboat finished the singles leading 5-3. The doubles saw the Ferrets again take the first frame but the Lifeboat then took the last 3 frames to end the match 8-4 winners.
