Season 2007 / 2008

Thursday 8th may 2008 - Finals Night

Once again after 30 weeks of red hot competition we find ourselves faced with Finals Night, for some an evening to remain focused and single minded but for others the opportunity to get out of focus and bloody minded. This year we find ourselves at a new venue The Sheaf of Wheat and with the blessing of Eric and Linda the restaurant was converted into a Crucible like setting ready for the evenings events, and little did we know of the events to follow.

The evening started with the traditional draw for the competitions which threw up some interesting ties, the 5 man Team event saw the Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Rugby Club and Reef Bar v Pool Club 'B', the doubles Tristian Campion & Scott Hudson (Pool 'B') v Billy Moore & Martin Phillips (Reef) and Christian Fitzgerald & Richard Thompson (Cornish 'A') v Simon Pollard & Jeremy Ward (Rugby). The singles also threw up some interesting ties with Richard Goldsmith (Howard) v Ricky Chilton (Rugby) and Jeremy Gaylard (Cornish 'B') v Shane Eddy (Cornish 'B'), and finally the Reg Hart Charity Knockout Brian Ashwin (Sheaf 'B') v Ben Lambourne (Reef) and Alex Pryce (Cornish 'A') v Dave Hart (Cornish 'B').

With the Charity KO being played in the front bar the mini Crucible created in the restaurant started with the doubles on both tables playing the best of 3 frames, both games were hard fought but Tristian Campion & Scott Hudson proved too strong for Billy Moore and Martin Phillips as they won 2-0. On the other table it was a similar story as Simon Pollard and Jeremy Ward also finished off Christian Fitzgerald & Richard Thompson by the same score, Simon Pollard making his 4th Final in the last 6 years with 3 different partners quite a record obviously a competition he enjoys!! Meanwhile back at the ranch sorry in the front bar the Charity KO had finished their first round with Ben Lambourne beating Brian Ashwin 2-1 and Dave Hart beating Alex Pryce by 2-1 also setting up an interesting Final. With the Charity KO continuing in the front bar the Crucible moved on to the 5 Man Team KO.

The first table saw the Sheaf of Wheat 'A' taking on the Rugby Club and on the other table the Reef Bar locked horns with the Pool Club 'B'. With the high stakes and pressure cooker atmosphere both games continued on at a pace with the Rugby Club winning by a 3-1 margin and the Pool Club 'B' following suit against the Reef Bar and also winning 3-1. So we have 3 out of the 4 finals decided. And so onto the Singles with Shane Eddy and Jeremy Gaylard team mates on one table and Richard Goldsmith and Ricky Chilton on the other, did I say team mates well there certainly wasn't any love lost between Shane and Jeremy as they fought tooth and nail for every pot. Eventually after much safety counter safety potting and agonising Jeremy finally came out on top 2-1 to reach the final, on the other table a more attacking match was taking place with small bouts of safety play which eventually saw the pressure take its toll on Richard Goldsmith as Ricky Chilton squeezed through 2-1. News from the other bar filtered through that we had a winner the first of the night, the Reg Hart Charity KO had been decided in an epic 3-2 victory for Ben Lambourne over Dave Hart a close and sporting victory in the memory of Reg, very fitting indeed.

At this point in the evening the doors of the Kitchen flew open and a deluge of finely prepared food was served, a true delight for the taste buds of all as Eric and his staff once again did us proud. Several people were trampled as the crowds fought to consume the wonders on offer and after a short but frenzied assault on the food a piece of Garlic Bread and a lonesome Sausage Roll were left cowering in the corner. So back to the Pool and the first final in the Crucible the 5 Man Team KO with the Rugby Club taking on the Pool Club 'B', we started on both tables and after the first 2 frames things were equal 1-1, the next 2 games started and the Rugby Club took a 2-1 lead and all eyes fell on Jonathon Peters and Luke Goodchild on the second table. After some tense last shots the chance fell to Jonathon and he kept his nerve to sink the black and take the game 3-1 for the Rugby Club, and so began the endless ramblings of the Rugby Club captain Larry Andrews but thats another story!!!

With the time now moving on the desicion was made to start the Doubles final and Singles on both tables, Tristian & Scott started well but the experience of Simon and some solid back up from Jeremy saw them take the first frame. The second frame saw pretty much the same story as Simon & Jeremy eased there way to the black and safely slotted it home a fine effort, but take nothing away from Tristian & Scott who with a little more luck could quite easily have made the game alot closer. A fine performance by Simon who has now won 4 out of the last 6 Doubles KO finals which is something of an acheivement in itself but has also done it with 3 different partners making it even more remarkable.

Now only one game remained the Singles KO Final with Jeremy and Ricky trading blows, Jeremy's methodical style and Ricky's more spontanious efforts a true chalk and cheese final. First blood went to Ricky but Jeremy then ground out the second frame, only for Ricky to come back and take the third with some lovely Pool that had everyone engrossed. The fourth frame started and time ticked on as the hour mark was reached and the tension rose Jeremy held his nerve to take the match into a deciding frame, and what a frame it turned out to be. With the balls tied up and both players not wanting to make an error safety play became paramount and it was somewhat surprising that Jeremy made the first move splitting the balls to try and make a run for the line but in the immortal line from that song "things didn't go the way Jeremy planned" Ricky had a chance and clearing his remaining balls line himself up on the black. You could cut the tension in the Crucible with a knife and Ricky took the shot only for it to rattle and stay on the table, Jeremy came back to the table and tried to save the match but to no avail leaving Ricky a second chance on the black, this time he made sure but had to watch agonisly as the white started to get very close to the corner pocket but stopped just short. A remarkable performance by Ricky who previously won the title back in 2002/03 especially as he has recently recovered from an extremley serious illness and I know Jeremy won't mind me saying this but a very popular winner too.

So to the Presntations and as we worked our way through the Raffle, 8 Balls and Knockout presentations, we came to the Charity KO sponsored by Second to none Roofing and Billy Moore, Billy came up to do the presentation and thanked Mrs Jones whose Gutter bill has apparantly gone up by £150. Then we came to the Reg Hart Memorial Trophy for the Most Sporting Team which this year has been scored by each team every week they play, giving an accurate result on who has actually been the Most Sporting, only one person knew who this was and that person was me. Anyway back to the presentation and this year the Sheaf of Wheat 'A' won quite fitting seeing as we were actually in the Sheaf itself. After that we worked our way through the Most Wins and Overall competitions to we finally got to the presentation for the League Champions who this year were the Cornish Arms 'A', quite an acheivemnet by them and a bigger one in coming up to collect their trophies as they had tried to drink the cellar of the Sheaf dry, Many congratulations to them and everyone else that had won this year !!!!!

Finally I would like to thank Eric, Linda and their staff, Peter, Dave and Norma Hart for doing the raffle, all who reffed on the night the committee members and especially Roger Davies our Chairman and Martin Peters who helped with the setting up of the tables and lights for the night. Lastly thanks to all of you for supportting the League this year and hopefully you'll all be back again in September for another year of how shall we say Booze and Cues.....Cheers

Thursday 24th April 2008 - Week 30

So we come to the end and what a finish, both the Cornish Arms teams fighting for the title and in the battle of the Bottle the Cornish Arms 'A' came out on top. This is only the 3rd time in the last 12 years that the Cornish Arms 'B' (playing from varoius venues) have lost the title a great performance by the Cornish Arms 'A'. The Most Singles Wins title was also very close and last year joint winner Martin Peters (Sheaf 'A') made a last ditch effort and caught Dave Hart (Cornish 'B') so we have joint winners once again, Congratulations to both players.

Croft v 3 Ferrets - The Ferrets starting just one off the bottom visited the Croft and put up a fine performance against an under strength Croft team drawing 4-4 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the teams share the frames to end the match with a 6-6 draw but was this enough to keep them off the bottom.

Reef Bar v Cornish Arms 'B' - With the Cornish 'A' at home the Cornish 'B' needed to put in a good performance to have any chance of retaining their title. The singles started with a Reef win followed by a Cornish 'B' win and so on and so forth until the end where the teams found themselves drawing 4-4. The doubles saw the Cornish 'B' start strongly winning the first 2 frames and a glimmer of hope but then the Reef spoilt the party by taking the next 2 frames to draw the match 6-6. A good season by the Cornish 'B' but just falling short at the last !!!

Pool Club 'A' v Halsetown Inn - No Match Report available.

Howards v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - The Howards (in fancy dress) started well winning the first 3 frames before the Sheaf 'B' had a mini fight back but to no avail as they found themselves 6-2 down to the Howards at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the the Sheaf 'B' win the first frame but then the Howards got back into gear and took the remainng frames to win the match 9-3.

Engine Inn v Rugby Club - In effect an A versus B match since the Engine moved to the Rugby Club due to the Engine Inn closing down saw a close bout of singles frames which ended 4-4. The doubles proved to be a bit different as the Rugby Club turned it on to win all 4 frames and finish the game 8-4 winners.

Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Lifeboat Inn - The Lifeboat started well winning 3 out of the first 4 frames an advantage they held onto until the end of the singles which they led 5-3. The doubles saw the Lifeboat step it up again as they won 3 out of the 4 frames to finish the match with a very good 8-4 win.

British Legion v Pool Club 'B' - The Legion trying for their highest League finish started well and looked determined to ensure 3rd place by winning the singles 6-2. The doubles saw the Pool 'B' put up more of a fight and managed to share the frames 2-2 to see the Legion win 8-4 and secure 3rd place, an excellent season for the Legion !!!

Cornish Arms 'A' v Golden Lion - With it all at stake the Cornish Arms 'A' rolled up their sleeves and got down to it with only James Mason of the Lion winning a singles frame as the the Cornish 'A' effectively won the title by taking the singles 7-1. The doubles saw the Lion win the first frame but the new Champions then went into Champions mode and took the next 3 frames to comprehensively win the match and League Title with a impressive 10-2 win.

Performance of the Week - Cornish Arms 'A'

Most Singles Wins - Dave Hart (Cornish 'B') and Martin Peters (Sheaf 'A') joint

Most Doubles Wins - Andy Peters (Cornish 'B')

Overall Wins Champion - Duncan Halliday (Cornish 'A')

League Champions - Cornish Arms 'A'

Thursday 17th April 2008 - Week 29

What a week with one more left to go things have really warmed up, four 8 Ball clearances and 2 competitions decided and to top it all the 2 top teams level on points and only team games won separating them. The closest finish in the league for as many years as I can remember with the 2 Cornish Arms teams level with one to play it really is squeaky bum time and after 29 games it comes down to whoever can hold their bottle on the last day of the season. Dave Hart (Cornish 'B'), Kia White (Halsetown), Larry Andrews (Rugby Club) and Simon Pollard (Rugby Club) all recorded 8 Balls, the most in one week for quite a few years. Finally Congratulations go to Andy Peters (Cornish 'B') who secured the Most Doubles Wins Competition and Duncan Halliday (Cornish 'A') who secured the Overall Wins Competition this year.

Golden Lion v Croft - No Match Report available.

Pool Club 'B' v Cornish Arms 'A' - With it being tight at the top the Cornish 'A' needed a solid performance and they started well winning the first 2 frames, the Pool 'B' fought back but couldn't hold the Cornish 'A' as they went on to lead 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles proved to be a harder task for the Cornish 'A' as they struggled and the Pool 'B' won 3 out of the 4 frames to bring it back to a 6-6 draw.

Lifeboat Inn v British Legion - Third placed Legion visited the Lifeboat and started well going 3-0 up but failed to keep the momentum going as the Lifeboat turned it round and won the last 3 frames to level the game 4-4 at the end of the singles. The Doubles saw the same kind of pattern as the teams shared the frames to draw 6-6.

Rugby Club v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - The Rugby Club started well taking a 2-0 lead before the Sheaf 'A' fought back taking the next 2 then the teams shared the frames to the end of the singles to make it 4-4. The doubles saw the Sheaf 'A' take the first frame before the Rugby club won the next 3 including 2 8 Ball clearances in the last 2 frames for Larry Andrews and Simon Pollard, a remarkable last 2 frames that secured a 7-5 win for the Rugby Club.

Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Engine Inn - The Sheaf 'B' were certainly in the mood this week as the Engine found themselves 8-0 down at the end of the singles and the Sheaf 'B' rampant. The doubles started with the Engine winning the first frame but the Sheaf 'B' soon got back to winning ways and quickly took the next 3 with Richard Dorrington making amends for his worst shot of the season against the Sheaf 'A' by potting a cracking black, altogether a strange but enjoyable win for the Sheaf 'B'. With form like that and another 20 weeks to go in the season the title could beckon LOL !!!!

Halsetown Inn v Howards - The Halsetown left it until the second to last game of the season to record their highest win of the season as the romped through the singles to lead 6-2. The doubles found the Howards left wanting again as they lost 3 out of the 4 frames to lose 9-3 to the Halsetown including the fourth 8 Ball of the week by Kia White , Remarkable !!!!

Cornish Arms 'B' v Pool Club 'A' - With the Cornish 'A' drawing the Cornish 'B' had a chance to take advantage, they started well winning the first 2 frames but then the Pool 'A' took the next 3 to lead 3-2, not quite to plan for the Cornish 'B', the singles finally finished 4-4. The doubles found the Cornish 'B' taking advantage winning 3 out of the 4 frames including an 8 Ball clearance for Dave Hart securing a 7-5 win for the Cornish 'B' and taking them level at the top with the Cornish 'A'.

3 Ferrets v Reef Bar - The Reef started well going 5-0 up before the Ferrets won 2 out of the last 3 frames to make it 6-2 to the Reef at the end of the Singles. The doubles saw the Ferrets win the first frame but the Reef came back strong winning the last 3 frames to win comfortably 9-3.

Performance of the Week - Sheaf of Wheat 'B'

Thursday 10th April 2008 - Week 28

With 2 weeks to go the Singles and Doubles wins are both very close with everything still to play for, the Overall competition could be tied up with a week to go if Duncan Halliday of the Cornish 'A' wins both his singles and doubles he can't be caught. On the League front it now looks as if it's a 2 horse race between the Cornish Arms A and B as they are separated by a point with 2 League games to play.

Croft v Reef Bar - No Match Report available.

Pool Club 'A' v 3 Ferrets - The Ferrets started well winning the first frame but then could only manage one more in the singles as the Pool 'A' romped to a 6-2 lead, the doubles saw the Ferrets fight back winning the first 3 frames before the Pool 'A' secured victory in the last frame to win 7-5.

Howards v Cornish Arms 'B' - With 3 games to go the Cornish 'B' couldn't afford to drop too many points against the Howards, they found themselves 7-0 up until Dave Black of the Howards won the last singles frame to make it 7-1. The doubles started with the Cornish 'B' again starting strongly winning the first 2 but the Howards dug deep and took the last 2 to keep it to a 9-3 for the Cornish 'B'.

Engine Inn v Halsetown Inn - The Engine raced off to a 3-1lead in the singles before the Halsetown won the next 2 but the Engine carried on to lead at the end of the singles 5-3. The Doubles saw a better show from the Halsetown as they won the first 2 frames before the Engine regained their composure and took the last 2 to seal a 7-5 victory.

Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - In a tense and nail biting beer driven game the 2 Sheaf teams fought it out and found themselves 4-4 at the end of the singles, during the singles Richard Dorrington officially won the miss of the season award as he missed an easy black for victory against Martin Peters who went on to win the frame !!! The doubles proved to less nail biting as the Sheaf 'B' won the first but then collasped alarmingly as the Sheaf 'A' won the last 3 frames to win 7-5.

Rugby Club v British Legion - The Legion started well winning the first 2 frames but the Rugby Club countered by winning the next 2, but then they suffered a mini collapse as the Legion won all the remaining singles frames to lead 6-2 going into the doubles. The doubles started with the Rugby Club winning the first but again the Legion took the last 3 frames to secure an impressive 9-3 win.

Cornish Arms 'A' v Lifeboat Inn - With the Cornish 'B' winning 9-3 the Cornish 'A' needed a good result to keep their advantage at the top of the League, they started well winning the first 2 frames but the Lifeboat took the next 2 to level it up. The Cornish 'A' then dug deep to win 3 out of the last 4 singles to lead 5-3 going into the doubles. The doubles saw the Cornish also win 3 out of 4 frames to win the match 8-4 but drop a point to their rivals the Cornish 'B'.

Golden Lion v Pool Club 'B' - With only James Mason of the Lion winning in the singles the Pool 'B' found themselves 7-1 up going into the doubles, the doubles saw much of the same as the Pool 'B' strolled to a 10-2 victory.

Performance of the Week - British Legion

Thursday 3rd April 2008 - Week 27

With only 4 weeks left to play this weeks matches could prove to be very important indeed, with the Rugby Club and British Legion probably just too far off the pace to catch the top 2 but as someone said once "It's a funny old game !!". Watch this space anything could happen !!

Pool Club 'B' v Croft - The Croft started well winning the first 2 frames but couldn't keep it going as the Pool 'B' won 5 out of the next 6 to lead at the end of the singles 5-3. The doubles proved to be closer as the frames were shared 2-2 and the Pool 'B' held on to their advantage to win 7-5.

Lifeboat Inn v Golde Lion - No Match Report available.

Rugby Club v Cornish Arms 'A' - If either team could get a result in this game they could set themselves up for a challenge, the Cornish 'A' set off at pace winning the first 3 frames before the Rugby Club countered winning the next 3. The last 2 frames were shared and the teams were level 4-4 at the end of the singles with Duncan Halliday's impressive 10 game winning streak also bought to an end also it was a hard fought 8 singles. The doubles saw pretty much the same again as the teams shared the frames 2-2 but the first doubles frame did see Mark Stratton of the Cornish 'A' complete an 8 ball clearance but to no avail as the teams drew 6-6.

Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v British Legion - In a light hearted game things started closely as the frames were shared but then the Legion showed their teeth winning the last 3 frames in the the singles to lead 5-3. The doubles also saw the Legion attacking the game winning 3 out of the 4 frames to win 8-4.

Halsetown Inn v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - The Sheaf 'A' started well winning the first 2 frames and carried this on through the singles as they won 6 out of the 8 frames to lead 6-2 going into the doubles. The doubles saw a slight improvement from the Halsetown as they shared the frames with the Sheaf 'A' 2-2 to see the Sheaf 'A' win 8-4.

Cornish Arms 'B' v Engine Inn - With the Cornish 'A' playing the Rugby Club the Cornish 'B' had a chance to try and close the gap at the top, things didn't start to well as the Engine won the first but this was only a blip as the Cornish 'B' went on to win 6 out of the next 7 to end the singles 6-2 up. The doubles saw the the Cornish keep the pressure on as they won 3 out of the 4 frames to win 9-3 and keep the pressure on the Cornish 'A'.

3 Ferrets v Howards - In recent weeks the Howards have been right on top of their form and started well going 2 up which they carried on through to the end of the singles to lead 5-3. The doubles started with the Howards winning the first 2 frames and the thoughts of another good high scoring result but the Ferrets decided that the Howards had won enough and took the last 2 frames to make it a 7-5 win for the Howards.

Reef Bar v Pool Club 'A' - The Pool 'A' started well winning the first 2 frames but the Reef won frames 5 and 6 to see the teams drawing 4-4 at the end of the singles. The doubles needed a team to take charge of the match to ensure a result and the Pool 'A' did this winning 3 out of the 4 frames to steal the game 7-5.

Performance of the Week - Cornish Arms 'B'

Thursday 27th March 2008 - Week 26

With the top of the table remaining tight the teams at the top can ill afford to drop points this week, with only 4 games left to play it still remains close. This sunday also see's the start of the Knockouts with the Singles competition starting.

Croft v Pool Club 'A' - An interesting game with both teams swapping frames which saw the teams drawing 4-4 at the end of the singles. Into the doubles and the Croft won the first frame but then he Pool 'A' took the game by the scruff winning the next 3 frame to steal the win 7-5.

Howards v Reef Bar - The Reef started well winning the first 2 but this was a false dawn as the Howards then went on to win 5 out of the next 6 frames to lead 5-3 at the end of the singles. The doubles saw the Howards improve again as they won all 4 frames to win impressively 9-3.

Engine Inn v 3 Ferrets - Another close game this one as the teams swapped frames in the singles with the Engine just shading it and winning the singles 5-3. The Engine then won the first doubles to go 6-3 up but the Ferrets then fought back winning the next 3 to draw the game 6-6.

Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Cornish Arms 'B' - With it being tight at the top this looked to be tough game for the Cornish 'B' but they started well winning the first 3 before the Sheaf 'A' got it together winning the next 3. The Cornish 'B' then dug deep to win the last 2 to make it 5-3 at the end of the singles. The Doubles proved to be decisive with only Eric Bloxham and Martin Peters winning for the Sheaf 'A' as the Cornish 'B' went on to win 8-4.

British Legion v Halsetown Inn - A chance for the Legion to try and make up some ground on the top 2 but after the singles they found themselves drawing 4-4. The Halsetown then won the first frames in the doubles before th legion got it together and won the last 3 to sneak the win 7-5, not really enough from the Legion and they will need to win all 4 of their last games well to be in with any chance.

Cornish Arms 'A' v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - With the Cornish 'A' starting the evening top points were important and they got down to buisness winning the singles 6-2. The doubles started with a good even if very fortunate clearance by Andy Livermore as the Sheaf 'B' to take the first frame, the Cornish won the next and then Shaun Care of the Sheaf 'B' had an impressive 8 Ball clearance before the Cornish 'A' won the last to make it 8-4.

Golden Lion v Rugby Club - If the Rugby Club wanted to stay in touch they needed a good result and at the end of the singles they found themselve drawing 4-4. The doubles saw the same sort of thing as the teams shared the frames to end the game 6-6.

Pool Club 'B' v Lifeboat Inn - All you can say about this game is that Mike Walpole of the Lifeboat was their only winner as the Pool 'B swept to an 11-1 victory.

Performance of the Week - Pool Club 'B'

Thursday 20th March 2008 - Week 25

Sorry for the late update this week but due to my Jet Set life style LOL!!! and the Easter festivities things have been a bit hectic, anyway to this week and matters Pool . Sadly this week saw the last game for a member of our League ex Chairman Dirk Lengton who after many years has had his Parole revoked and has been ordered to return to Botany Bay, but seriously Dirk will be missed and I personally would like to thank him for his contribution to this League over the years and hope the Leg Irons don't dig in too much on his trip back to Oz.

Lifeboat Inn v Croft - A suprising result to start this weeks round up as the Croft visited the Lifeboat and found themselves 6-2 down at the end of the singles. The doubles saw a slight improvement from the Croft as they shared the frames with the Lifeboat who went on to equal their highest win of the season 8-4.

Rugby Club v Pool Club 'B' - On paper this should of been a close game with the scores being 5-3 at the end of the singles to the Rugby Club it was turning out that way. The doubles didn't prove any different as the teams shared the 4 frames 2 a piece to see the Rugby Club narrowly win 7-5.

Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Golden Lion - In a very competitive match the Lion took the early advantage and led 5-3 at the end of the singles. The match then turned as the Sheaf 'B' decided to fight back and won all 4 doubles frames to steal the game 7-5, quite a comeback !!!

Halsetown Inn v Cornish Arms 'A' - The League Leaders visited the Halsetown and kept the pressure on at the top with only Mark Terry of the Halsetown winning in the singles as the Cornish 'A' flew into a 7-1 lead. The doubles proved to be less one sided as the Halsetown held them to a 2-2 draw but the damage was already done and the Cornish 'A' recorded a 9-3 win.

Cornish Arms 'B' v British Legion - A crucial game at the top of the table which neither team could afford to lose, the Cornish 'B' started well and after winning the first 2 frames went on to lead 5-3 at the end of the singles. The Legion then found some form winning 3 out of the 4 doubles to bring the match back to a 6-6 draw, which in truth helped the Cornish 'A' more than either team.

3 Ferrets v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - The Sheaf 'A' have been stuttering of late but this week they found themselves in a commanding 6-2 lead at the end of the singles. The doubles proved to be as successful as they won 3 out of 4 doubles frames to end the match 9-3.

Reef Bar v Engine Inn - Another high scoring singles result as the Reef raced into 7-1 lead with only Richard Garbutt of the Engine winning in the singles and Martin Stevens of the Reef recording an 8 ball clearance. The doubles saw the Reef ram home their advantage winning 3 out of 4 frames to finish the game 10-2 winners.

Pool Club 'A' v Howards - In a fairytale world the Pool 'A' and Dirk would of won this one 12-0 but the Howards were having none of that sentimental stuff as they cruised to a 6-2 lead after being 2-0 down in the singles. The doubles saw the Howards push even harder and win the first 3 frames, but cometh the hour cometh the man and Paul Clegg and that man Dirk Lengton saved some face as they won the last frame, but the Howards came away with an impressive 9-3 win.

Performance of the Week - Reef Bar

Thursday 13th March 2008 - Week 24

Only six weeks to go now before the end of the season and after this weeks games 4 teams are divided by 8 points at the top of the table. With games to be played against each other this year could still be a close run thing between all 4 and the title race is far from over yet.

Croft v Howards - The good form that the Howards have shown over recent games was in evidence again as they fought their way to a 5-3 lead at the end of the singles. The Croft started the doubles with a win but then the Howards resumed their good form again winning the next 3 frames to end the game with an 8-4 win.

Engine Inn v Pool Club 'A' - The Engine started well against the Pool 'A' winning the first 4 frames and then the last 2 frames to lead surprisingly 6-2 at the end of the singles. The Pool 'A' then decided to fight back winning the first 3 doubles frames to bring it back to 6-5 but Tim Poole and Dan Richardson of the Engine won the last to secure a 7-5 victory.

Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Reef Bar - The Sheaf 'A' started by winning 3 out the first 4 frames before the Reef won 3 out of the next 4 including an 8 Ball Clearance by Martin Phillips, ending the singles with the teams drawing 4-4. The doubles saw the 2 teams share the 4 frames to end the match 6-6.

British Legion v 3 Ferrets - The Legion might just have played themselves into the title race with this weeks result, only Stuart Kennerley the captain of the Ferrets won a frame as the Legion demolished the Ferrets 11-1. With games against the Cornish 'B' and Rugby Club in coming weeks they could really have a bearing on who wins the title and wether they can force their way into contention.

Cornish 'A' v Cornish 'B' - In the big game of the week 1st played 2nd, the game started well for the Cornish 'A' as they won the first 2 frames, but things turned sour as the current Champions dug deep and won 5 out of the next 6 frames with only Duncan Halliday of the Cornish 'A' winning in that sequence. This is where the game changed and the Cornish 'A' seem determined to try and wrestle the title away from their 'B' side as they went on to win all 4 doubles and win the game 7-5, and take the lead in the League.

Golden Lion v Halsetown Inn - No Match Report available.

Pool Club 'B' v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - The Pool 'B' started well winning the first 4 frames before the Sheaf 'B' won a frame and the singles finish with the Pool 'B' leading 6-2. The Sheaf 'B' tried to rally in the doubles but could only manage the first 2 frames in the doubles as the Pool 'B' went on to win 8-4.

Lifeboat Inn v Rugby Club - With the top 2 playing each other the Rugby Club had the chance to close the gap, things started well as they lead 4-1 after the first 5 frames but then the Lifeboat put together a run of 3 frames to level the match 4-4 at the end of the singles. The doubles then saw the Lifeboat take the first 2 frames to lead 6-4 and the Rugby Club having to dig deep to win the last 2 to grab the draw.

Performance of the Week - British Legion

Thursday 6th March 2008 - Week 23

This week saw the teams at the top all winning keeping it close before the Cornish Arms 'A' v Cornish Arms 'B' head to head.

Rugby Club v Croft - The Croft visited the Rugby Club and quickly found themselves 6-0 down in the singles only Landlord Mick Hastings managed to record a win as the Rugby Club stormed to a 7-1 lead. The Doubles saw the Rugby Club win the first frame before the Croft found their form and won the last 3 frames to end the match losing 8-4 to the Rugby Club.

Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Halsetown Inn - This is a first and I hope that others feel like adding to the site, I have been sent a report from this match and its as follows " Halsteown got off to a blistering start and were 5 -1 up within 40 minutes. The doubles proved to be a lot closer with both teams winning 2 frames seeing the Sheaf 'B' winning 8-4, although Lee Hall might feel a little disappointed after playing shot of the night and unlucky going in off for the Sheaf 'B'.

With a mountain to climb the Cornish 'A' started the doubles poorly and lost the first 2 meaning the Cornish 'B' won 8 in a row before the Cornish 'A' regained some composure and won the last 2 to save some face and finish with an 8-4 defeat. An outstanding performance by the defending champions the Cornish Arms 'B' who seem reluctant to release their grip on the League title.

Well what a week with some surprising results and some big scores. On the unbeaten player front the last player Duncan Halliday (Cornish 'A') finally lost but Brian Ashwin (Sheaf 'B') who has a game to be rearranged still has an unbeaten record although the game has still to be arranged to keep the run going. Unbeaten in the singles are only 3 players Dave Hart (Cornish 'B'), Martin Peters (Sheaf 'A') and Brian Ashwin (Sheaf 'B'), in the doubles again there are 4 players Andy Peters (Cornish 'B'), Shane Eddy (Cornish 'B'), Paul Beadnell (Sheaf 'B') and Brian Ashwin (Sheaf 'B').

In the doubles they made a play for the game by winning the first 2 doubles frames but ran out of steam and the Engine fought back and won the last 2 frames to grab a draw.

Howards v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - A good game this one with the Sheaf 'A' winning the last 3 singles frames to end the singles 5-3 up with the doubles to come. The Sheaf 'A' then won the first doubles frame but the Howards then won the next 2 to make it a win / draw last frame for the Sheaf 'A' and Roger Davies and Martin Peters didn't disappoint and won to make it 7-5 to the Sheaf 'A'.

The doubles were also split 2-2 meaning a close game and 6-6 draw.

3 Ferrets v Golden Lion - The Lion visited the Ferrets and quite simply hammered the Ferrets with only Tony Lewis of the Ferrets winning in the singles as the Lion walked to a 7-1 lead at the end of the singles. Halsetown Inn v Lifeboat Inn - The Lifeboat took a trip to the Halsetown and it turned out to be a very close game indeed the Lifeboat made it 5-3 at the end of the singles by winning the last 2 frames. This turned out to be significant as they went on to share the doubles and take a 7-5 victory home with them.

Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Rugby Club - The singles started with the Rugby Club winning 2 out of the first 3 singles but then the Sheaf 'B' put together a run of 5 singles wins to lead after the singles 6-2, as everyone stepped over Larry's bottom lip we moved onto the doubles. The Rugby Club won the first doubles frame but this was only a small blip as the Sheaf 'B' went on to win the next 3 and finish the match with a good 9-3 win, altogether a very good game played in a fantastic spirit of which the Rugby Club more than played their part.

Performance of the Week : Golden Lion

Thursday 25th October 2006 - Week 6

So after 6 weeks the table is taking a familar shape with the 2 Cornish Arms teams taking their place at the top but so far this year it's the Cornish Arms 'A' showing the way, but theres a long way to go and a lot of Pool to be played. On the the undefeated player front Duncan Halliday (Cornish Arms 'A') is the only player left although this is due to Brian Ashwin not playing this week due to a postponement, that will hopefully be re arranged in the near future.

Croft v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - To be re arranged at a later date.

Rugby Club v Halsetown Inn - The Rugby Club entertained the bottom side the Halsetown Inn and started like a train winning the first 7 singles frames with only Louis Wardman of the Halsetown winning the last singles frame to make it 7-1 to the Rugby Club at the end of the singles. Much of the same followed in the doubles with the Rugby Club winning 3 out of the 4 doubles to finish with a thumping 10-2 win.

Lifeboat Inn v Cornish Arms 'B' - The defending champions visited the Lifeboat and started by sharing the first 4 singles frames but then strung together the next 3, the Lifeboat countered and won the last to make it 5-3 to the Cornish 'B' at the end of the singles. In the doubles it was a different story with the Cornish 'B' grasping the chance and winning all 4 to run out 9-3 winners, a nice away win.

Pool Club 'B' v 3 Ferrets - The Pool Club 'B' welcomed the 3 Ferrets and set about winning the first 3 singles before the Ferrets took the next 2, the Pool 'B' then took a grip on the singles winning the final 3 frames to make it 6-2 at the end of the singles. In the doubles the Ferrets dug deep anw won the 1st, 3rd and 4th frames to make it a close game in the end with the Pool 'B' winning 7-5.

Golden Lion v Reef Bar - The unpredictable Lion hosted the Reef Bar in which turned out to be an interesting game, after the Reef went 2-1 up the Lion put a run of 4 singles frames together before the Reef Bar managed to win the last singles frame to make it a 5-3 lead for the Golden Lion at the end of the singles. The Reef won the first doubles frame but then the Lion strung together the next 3 to complete a surprising 8-4 win over the Reef Bar.

Cornish Arms 'A' v Pool Club 'A' - The in form Cornish 'A' were payed a visit by the Pool Club 'A' and boy they must of been pleased to see them as Steve Whitehouse of the Pool 'A' was the only player to win in the singles as the Cornish 'A' romped to a 7-1 lead in the singles. The Pool 'A' faired even worse in the doubles failing to win a frame and going down to a thumping 11-1 win to the Cornish 'A' who really seem to be in form so far this season.

British Legion v Howards - After splitting the first 2 frames the Howards then won the next 3 before the Legion managed to claw back the next 2, and with Dave Black of the Howards winning the last the Howards led 5-3 at the end of the singles. The Sheaf 'A' then went on to win the first 2 doubles frames to take them to 6-4 but the Engine won the 3rd making it a win / draw last frame in which the Sheaf's Steve Davies and Dan Foster won to secure a 7-5 victory for the Sheaf 'A' in a very close game.

Performance of the Week - Cornish Arms 'A'

Thursday 18th October 2007 - Week 5

Five weeks in and there are only 2 undeafeated players Brian Ashwin (Sheaf of Wheat 'B') and Duncan Halliday (Cornish Arms 'A'). There are only 4 undeafeated singles players and 7 undeafeated doubles players, well done to all especially Brian and Duncan and I think it just goes to prove that this year has been very competitive.

Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Croft - The Croft visited the Sheaf 'A' and found themselves 5-3 down after what looks like a very competitive round of singles games. Then it came to the doubles and the in form Croft took no prisoners as the Sheaf 'A' where comprehensively beaten 4-0, as the Croft did last week, to turn the match and win 7-5.

Engine Inn v British Legion - The Legion took the long road out to the Engine and started well by winning the first 3 singles then had a small hiccup before winning the last 3 singles ending up 6-2 leaders. The doubles started the same way with the Legion winning the first 2 to go 8-2 up but the Engine then dug deep and won the last 2 to stop the Legion running away with it, a good 8-4 away win for the Legion.

Howards v Cornish Arms 'A' - The Cornish 'A' went away to the Howards and after 2 singles frames were drawing 1-1 but then a run of six straight singles wins put them 7-1 up. The Howards won the first doubles frame to stop the runaway victory but this was only a temporary set back for the Cornish 'A' as they won the next 3 to make it an impressive 10-2 away victory and take them top of the table.

Pool Club 'A' v Golden Lion - A close game for the first 5 singles then the Pool 'A' strung together the last 3 frames to take a 5-3 lead at the end of the singles. The Lion then fought back again to win the first 2 doubles and tie the game at 5-5 but the Pool 'A' had just too much for them and won the last 2 doubles to win 7-5.

Reef bar v Pool Club 'B' - In the closest of derby games the Reef entertained the Pool 'B' and again the Pool 'B' won the last 3 frames in the singles to lead 5-3. The doubles were split 2-2 meaning that the Pool 'B' won a very close game 7-5.

3 Ferrets v Lifeboat Inn - The lifeboat took the first 2 frames away from home against the Ferrets then the Ferrets strung together the next 3, eventually after the singles it was a 4-4 draw. The Lifeboat then took the first 2 doubles to make it 6-4, but the Ferrets refused to give in and won the next 2 making it a 6-6 draw in a very close game.

Cornish Arms 'B' v Rugby Club - A very close game until the Cornish Arms 'B' took the last 2 singles frames to take a narrow 5-3 lead into the doubles. The Cornish 'B' then took the first 2 doubles to make it 7-3, but the Rugby boys fought hard and won the last 2 to end the game 7-5 to the Cornish.

Halsetown Inn v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - The Sheaf 'B' visited the Halsetown and found it hard going in the cramped conditions drawing 4-4 after the singles, with some home table advantage playing its part. The Halsetown then took the first 2 doubles to make it 6-4 but the Sheaf 'B' dug deep and the in form pairing of Brian Ashwin and Paul Beadnell won the last frame to make it a 6-6 draw.

Performance of the Week - Cornish Arms 'A'

Thursday 11th October 2007 - Week 4

Croft v Halsetown Inn - The Halsetown made the short journey to the Croft and met a side that is definitely in form at the moment, the Croft winning the singles 6-2. The Halsetown fared even worse in the doubles as the Croft went on to win all four and walk to an impressive 10-2 victory.

Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Cornish Arms 'B' - Last years champions visit the league's new venue and in an interesting singles battle the pair couldn't be split with the Sheaf 'B' winning the last two singles frames to make the score after the singles 4-4. Then the Cornish 'B' showed their class by winning 3 out of 4 doubles frames with only Brian Ashwin and Paul Beadnell winning for the Sheaf 'B' making the final score 7-5 to the Cornish 'B'.

Rugby Club v 3 Ferrets - The Rugby Club hosted the 3 Ferrets who don't seem to be travelling very well at the moment, and this game was no different. The Rugby Club tore them apart winning by an impressive 11-1 margin with Larry Andrews doing the captains duty for the Rugby Club and being the only one to lose.

Lifeboat Inn v Reef Bar - The Reef made the very short trip along the harbour front to the Lifeboat and started well winning the first two singles and although the Lifeboat won the next the Reef went on to be 6-2 up at the end of the singles. The first two doubles frames went to the Reef and a rout was on the cards until the Lifeboat dug deep and won the last two to make it an 8-4 victory for the Reef.

Pool Club 'B' v Pool Club 'A' - With the 'B' team having the honours of being the home side battle commenced and neither team could take a lead of any note leaving the singles a 4-4 draw. The 'B' team then took the first doubles but the 'A' team were having none of it taking the next 3 doubles to take a narrow 7-5 victory in a close derby game.

Golden Lion v Howards - Again this game was very close with neither side taking any advantage in the singles and a 4-4 draw was the result. The Howards made their move and won the first doubles frame but home table advantage played its part as the Lion went on to win the last 3 doubles making it a 7-5 home victory.

Cornish Arms 'A' v Engine Inn - The Engine came visiting and after 3 frames found themselves 2-1 up but the Cornish 'A' then found some form winning the next 5 frames to end the singles a healthy 6-2 up. The doubles were then split 2 frames each with last years runners up the Cornish 'A' finishing up 8-4 winners.

Legion v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - Last years 4th place side hosted last years 3rd place side a close battle on paper you would think, and the two sides didn't disappoint. The singles were drawn 4-4 and the doubles went down to the last frame with the Legion having a win / draw situation and unfortunately for them they could only manage the draw after Roger Davies and Eric Bloxham won the last frame.

Performance of the Week - Rugby Club

Thursday 4th October 2007 - Week 3

Ok after 3 weeks of what can only be described as extremely competitive matches this season we have only 3 players that are ubeaten in both singles and doubles, .... Duncan Halliday (Cornish Arms 'A'), Paul Beadnell (Sheaf of Wheat 'B') and Brian Ashwin (Sheaf of Wheat 'B'). Just behind these 3 players are a group of 9 players on 5 wins, altogether a very competitive start !!!!!

British Legion v The Croft - The Legion entertained the Croft and started well going 3-1 up until the Croft won 3 in a row out of the last 4 to make 4-4 after the singles. The Croft then won the first doubles to make it 5-4 but then the British Legion dug deep and won the last 3 doubles frames to win a close match 7-5.

Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Cornish Arms 'A' - Last years runners up visited last years 3rd placed Sheaf 'A', who have started the season very well. On paper this should have been a close battle, the first two frames were split but then the visiting Cornish strung together 5 frames on the trot finishing the singles 6-2 up. The Cornish then took the first doubles to make it 7-2, the Sheaf then won the next two to stop the rout and stop an embarrasing collapse but the Cornish won the last to make it an impressive 8-4 away victory.

Engine Inn v Golden Lion - A close game all round of which the the Golden Lion shaded the singles 5-3 by winning the last 2 singles frames. In the doubles the Engine made a fight of it by winning the first two doubles but the Lion held their nerve and won the last two to sneak a good 7-5 win in a very close game.

Howards - Pool Club 'B' - The Pool Club 'B' travelled to the Howards and roared away to a 4-0 lead in the singles but then the Howards dug in and won 3 out of the last 4 to make it 5-3 to the Pool Club, a good effort on behalf of the Howards after a disappointing start to the singles. The Pool Club then won the first two doubles to take the win and also the final doubles frame to run out 8-4 winners.

Pool Club 'A' v Lifeboat Inn - The Pool 'A' took an early 2-1 lead before the Lifeboat won the next 3 singles frames, the Pool 'A' then dug deep winning the last 2 to make it a 4-4 draw at the end of the singles. The Pool 'A' then won the first 2 doubles to take them to the brink but the Lifeboat were having none of it and took the last 2 doubles frmaes to make it 6-6.

Reef Bar v Rugby Club - The Reef Bar hosted the Rugby Club another close one to call and it worked out this way with the Reef Bar winning the singles 5-3. The Reef then won the first doubles to make it 6-3 and put themselves on the verge, but Jonathon Peters of the Rugby Club stopped the rot with an Eight ball clearance which inspired the Rugby club to go on and win the remaining Doubles to draw the game 6-6.

3 Ferrets v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - A real competitive game this one with home table advantage playing it's part and after the singles it was a close 4-4. The Sheaf 'B' won the first doubles to make it 5-3, but then the Ferrets won the next 2 to make it 6-5 and leave it a win/draw last frame for them. Unfortunatetly for the Ferrets they couldn't take advantage as the in form pairing of Paul Beadnell and Brian Ashwin grabbed the draw for the Sheaf 'B', Brian who later had a harder time with a bin bag and Paul are both really playing well at the beginning of this season.

Cornish Arms 'B' v Halsetown Inn - The Halsetown came visiting the defending champions and won the first frame but this proved to be the only frame they would win until the 3rd doubles as the Cornish 'B' romped to a 9-1 lead. The final score was a thumping 10-2 win the biggest so far this season and it seems the Cornish 'B' after a slow start have settled into their usual form, a bit ominous for their next opponents the Sheaf of Wheat 'B'.

Performance of the Week - Cornish Arms 'B'

Thursday 27th September 2007 - Week 2

Croft v Cornish Arms 'B' - Well the Croft must consider themselves unlucky to play the top two teams from last season in the first two weeks but have done extremely well against both. The Croft started well winning the first two frames and then the next six went alternately with the Coft leading 5-3 after the singles, the Cornish 'B' with some work to do in the doubles dug deep and won 3 out of 4 doubles frames to finish the match 6-6.

Halsetown Inn v 3 Ferrets - The Ferrets visited the Halsetown Inn and obviously travelled well winning the first 3 frames, Pete B of the Halsetown stopped the rot but only temporarily as the Ferrets romped to a 6-2 lead after the Singles. The Ferrets are showing some good singles form at the beginning of this season but could only win one doubles as the Halsetown roared back winning the first 3 doubles frames taking the game to a last frame win/draw frame for the Ferrets, but Stuart Kennerley and Chris Harper held their nerve to win and take the match 7-5.

Sheaf of Wheat 'B' v Reef Bar - The Sheaf 'B' hosted the Reef Bar who were in a generous mood, as the Sheaf 'B' won the first 4 singles frames, until Ben Lambourne of the Reef stopped the rot and turned the tide. The Reef then went on to win the next 4 and draw the singles 4-4. The doubles went the same way as the singles with the Sheaf 'B' winning the first two doubles although Ben Lambourne in the second cleared the table only to pot the black and pot a yellow to foul and lose the game, but the Reef once again dug deep and won the last two to draw the game 6-6.

Rugby Club v Pool Club 'A' - The Rugby Club hit the ground running winning the first 4 singles frames and must of been thinking of a big score against the Pool Club 'A', but Andy Badcock pulled one back and Steve Whitehouse another. Finally the singles ended 4-4 with the Pool Club 'A' fighting back, the doubles where split to end the game 6-6 but reports say the captain Larry Andrews of the Rugby club was less than happy with his teams performance.

Lifeboat Inn v Howards - The Howards visited the Lifeboat and as seems to have been the trend this week lost the first 4 singles, Steve Cocking stopped the rot for the Howards but the Lifeboat dug deep again and ended the Singles 6-2 up. In the doubles the Lifeboat won the first and probably smelt blood but the Howards won the next two to stop a hammering and ended up going home losing 8-4.

Pool Club 'B' v Engine Inn - The Engine visited the Pool Club and the game started with both teams sharing frames until the middle order of the Pool 'B' dug deep, the final frame was won by Ian Noall with an 8 Ball clearance meaning the Pool 'B' led at the end of the singles 5-3. The 8 Ball must of inspired the Pool 'B' as they won the first 3 doubles with Ian Noall missing another 8 Ball clearance on the black for a pair of 8 Balls in one night (only achieved as far as I can remember by Dean Millin of the Croft a couple of years ago). The Engine won the last frame to make the final score 8-4 to the Pool Club 'B'.

Golden Lion v Sheaf of Wheat 'A' - The singles in this game seemed to be very competitive with neither team opening a lead so that at the end of the singles it was 4-4, home table advantage coming into play. The Sheaf 'A' who seem to be the early form side this season used all their early season form to win 3 out of 4 doubles and finish the match 7-5 winners

Cornish Arms 'A' v British Legion - Last years runners up the Cornish Arms 'A' have atarted slowly this year and the Legion took advantage winning the first 3 singles but couldn't keep the pressure on and finally ended up splitting the singles 4-4 with the Cornish 'A'. Again in the doubles the Legion made a push for the win by taking the first two frames but once again the Cornish 'A' dug deep and showed their class then fought back to make it 6-6.

Performance of the Week - Pool Club 'B'

Thursday 20th September 2007 - Week 1

Ok people here we go again another winter of sporting excellence, it kicked off on thursday with a good turn out from all teams

Cornish 'A' v Croft - First week and two of the higher finishing teams of the past 3 or 4 years meet each other, it was the Croft that took the early advantage racing into a 4-0 lead in the singles. It took Duncan Halliday to stop the rot and make it 4-1 and finally the singles ended up 5-3 to the Croft, the Cornish Arms 'A' having to pull it out in the doubles to stop the Croft running away with it. The Cornish Arms 'A' didn't disappoint and won 3 out of 4 doubles with only Ian Hodgkinson and Chris Worrall of the Croft winning their doubles making a final match score of 6-6.

British Legion v Golden Lion - Last seasons 4th placed Legion taking on bottom finishing Golden Lion should of been a walk over on paper, and as the game atarted I'm sure everyone was thinking the same thing. The British Legion took the first 3 singles then Dave Squires of the Lion stopped the rot and turned the tide with the Lion winning 4 of the last 5 singles, only Barry Johns of the Legion won in the last 5 in the singles. At the end of the singles a surprising 4-4 draw going into the doubles but the Legion dug deep and won the first 3 doubles, only Dave Squires and Richard Stevens of the Lion winning which mean't that the Legion won 7-5

Sheaf of Wheat 'A' v Pool Club 'B' - Last seasons 3rd place finishing Sheaf up against the always steady Pool Club 'B' and the opening game went to the Pool 'B' with Josh Chandler winning, but then the Sheaf 'A' decided to wake up and won the next 4 on the trot. Jeff Robinson of the Pool 'B' inflicted the only other defeat in the singles by beating League Chairman Roger Davies meaning that the Sheaf lead at the end of the singles 6-2, then onto the doubles where the Sheaf pushed on winning the first 3 doubles. The Pool 'B's Josh Chandler and Alex Bonner managed to win the last doubles to see the final result a thunping 9-3 victory for the Sheaf of Wheat 'A'.

Engine Inn v Lifeboat Inn - The lifeboat had the longest trip out this week and made it out to the Engine where the singles were started with a win by T.Spencer of the Lifeboat. After this the games were pretty much shared with each team winning and losing alternate games until it ended 4-4 with all to play for in the doubles. It was the Lifeboat who turned up in the doubles demolishing the Engine by winning all 4 doubles and going home with an impressive 8-4 away victory.

Howards v Rugby Club - The Rugby Club visited the Howards and started off well by winning the first two singles, Steve Cocking and Joe Jeavons won the next two for the Howards to make it 2-2. Then the Rugby Club pushed on winning the next 3 singles and only Jason Shaw winning the last frame with an 8 Ball clearance stopped them from leading after the singles 6-2. At this point it was looking like a Rugby Club win with them leading 5-3 after the singles but the Howards had other ideas and thumped home by winning all 4 doubles and running out 7-5 winners.

Pool Club 'A' v Sheaf of Wheat 'B' - The only new team for this season the Sheaf of Wheat 'B' (Formally the Golden Lion 'B') paid a visit to the Pool Club 'A', and started impressively by winning the first two singles then it was ex Chairman Dirk Lengton against League Secretary Andy Livermore. In a competitive game Dirk ran out the winner but this was the only game the Pool 'A' won out the first 6 as the Sheaf 'B' went 5-1 up until Paul Farrell and Lee Tacagni managed to win the last 2 frames to make it 5-3 to the Sheaf at the end of the singles. The Doubles were split 2-2 that means the Sheaf of Wheat 'B' ended up winning 7-5 meaning that they got off to a winning start. Rumours are abound that the 30 pint transfer fee for Andy might have been a bit of high price to pay unless things improve. Captain Paul Beadnell commented "This may have to be revistited and changed to Andy paying 30 pints for the privilege of playing for the Sheaf 'B'."

Reef Bar v Halsetown Inn - The Halsetown visited the Reef Bar and traded singles frames with the Reef Bar all the way through until A.Farrell and Stuart Trevorrow won the last two to make it 5-3, painfull especially as Stuart is an ex Halsetown player. In the doubles only Tom Robertson and Guggs of the Reef Bar lost meaning that they won 3-1 in the doubles and 8-4 overall, a good start to the season.

3 Ferrets v Cornish Arms 'B' - The League Champions started their defence at the 'ritz' but failed to stamp any authority on the game and Lewis Gaylords' 8 Ball clearance in the last singles only made it 5-3 and the Ferrets smelt blood. The Cornish still failed to push on in the doubles and could only manage to share the doubles with the Ferrets an excellent performance for the Ferrets and a disappointing one for the Cornish although they won 7-5.
