Thursday 11th May 2007 - Finals Night

So we finally arrived at Finals Night held at the St Ives Rugby Club, tables in place lights working eventually and players turning up. At five to eight the draw was done by Andy and Dirk assisted by Paul and Richard from the Golden Lion 'B' and what an interesting draw it turned out to be, first drawn was the 5 Man Team. First out of the Ice bucket was the Cornish Arms 'B' followed by the Cornish Arms 'A', what a draw top two teams in the league pitched against each other in the semi final and to top it off both represent the Cornish Arms, the other semi saw the Croft against the Rugby Club. The Doubles draw was done next and first out of the Ice Bucket was Mark Stratton and Duncan Halliday of the Cornish Arms 'A' against the Queens Hotel pairing of Ollie Broadbank and Ezel Errington, this meant the second semi pitched the two pairings from the Cornish Arms 'B' together Kevin Veal and Lewis Gaylard against Shane Eddy and Andy Peters. Finally the names for the Singles were put into the Ice Bucket and drawn, out first Martin Stevens of the Reef Bar followed by Peter Hart of the Cornish 'B' and the second semi saw last years losing finalist Shane Eddy against this years Singles and Overall wins champion Martin Peters. After all that hard work Andy decided a drink was needed before annoucing to the mass ranks of players the result of the draw from the Ice Bucket, eventually all were informed of the draw and gasps and howls were to be heard from all round the Rugby Club. The running order was 5 Man Team, Doubles then Singles but before we srarted Andy called for a minutes silence in memory of Reg Hart who sadly passed away early this year, and it was exceptionally observed by one and all a fitting tribute to Reg's memory.

We then started with the 5 Man team competition with the two Cornish Arms teams on one table and the Croft and Rugby Club on the other, the Cornish Arms table rattled along to a 2-2 draw with Kevin Veal and Duncan Haliday playing the last and deciding frame. In the meantime on the other table the Croft had crawled to a 2-0 lead with Shaun ' I'm not happy until I 've played for an hour' Care and Simon 'Sky' Pollard playing the third frame, and true to form Shaun managed to drag it out for a good length of time including a re rack but eventually scrapped home with a win making it 3-0 to the Croft, Back on the other table Kevin fouled on the black ball giving Duncan the chance to take the game which he did, making it a Croft versus Cornish Arms 'A' final. Then we moved on to the Doubles competition with Mark Stratton and Duncan Halliday making short work of Ollie and Ezel winning with a convincing 2-0 win, mind you Ezel played under some duress as he had a cracked rib so all credit to him. The second semi saw the all Cornish Arms 'B' game between Kevin Veal and Lewis Gaylard against team mates Shane Eddy and Andy Peters, as you would expect this ws a highly competitive game with Shane and Andy getting the better of Kevin and Lewis 2-0, in a closer game than the result reflects. Then came the Singles with Martin Stevens of the Reef playing Peter Hart and Shane Eddy playing Martin Peters, in the first game Martin of the Reef was playing with a bit of a handicap seeing that he was in plaster with a broken ankle. Anyway after much hobbling and a re rack Martin ran out, pardon the pun, a 2-0 winner in the Shane and Marin semi Martin won the first frame and then 8 Balled Shane in the second frame to win 2-0, an excellent result.

So we moved onto the finals and first up was 5 Man Team and the Croft versus the Cornish Arms 'A' , the croft took an early lead 1-0 then the Cornish drew level 1-1, then the Croft took the next 2-1 and then Cornish countered making it 2-2. So after 4 frames it was 2-2 with Duncan of the Cornish and Andy of the Croft (both committee members) to play the last, I won't bore you with the details but I managed to pot the black and win the game for the Croft. First Knockout of the night was decided with a 3-2 victory for The Croft. Then we moved onto the Doubles Final with Mark and Duncan of the Cornish Arms 'A' , playing again after the 5 Man Team final, versus Shane and Andy from the Cornish Arms 'B'. Again this was a highly competitive encounter with some good pool played by both teams, at this point my reporting skills and memory were starting to fail due to the copious amounts of reassuringly expensive Stella Artois I was drinking,. Anyway back to the doubles final after a tense battle Mark and Duncan secured a 2-0 win over Shane and Andy and from what I can remember all 4 players played a big part in a good final. Finally we came to the Singles final with the 2 Martins playing each other, again Martin Stevens of the Reef hobbled around the table putting up a good fight and if I remember (Stella block) won the first frame but this only slowed Martin Peters who has been in outstanding form this year. Eventually Martin Peters started playing some excellent pool as he has all year and racked up the 3 frames he needed to become Singles Knockout champion.

After all the excitement of the Finals we came to the presentations and started with the Eight Ball presentations followed by the 5 Man Team winners The Croft, Doubles Knockout Champions Mark Stratton and Duncan Halliday of the Cornish Arms 'A' and the then Singles Knockout Champion Martin Peters of the Sheaf of Wheat. Then we came to the most Sporting Team which was donated to the League by Norma Hart in memory of Reg and will be now awarded each year, this year in a very close vote the Reef Bar were awarded the Reg Hart Memorial Trophy. We then came to the presentations for the League with Larry Andrews of the Rugby Club winning the most Doubles Wins, Roger Davies and Martin Peters both of the Sheaf of Wheat joint winners of the most Singles Wins and Martin Peters of the Sheaf of Wheat winning the Overall Wins competition. Finally we came to the League Runners Up the Cornish Arms 'A' and this years League Champions the Cornish Arms 'B', who have successfully defended their title this year. Also during the night there was a Speed Pool competition running on the third table which was won by Mark Williams of the British Legion with a table clearance in only 13 shots, very impressive, Mark won £12.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that took part in the competions and league this year and those who turned up for the Finals, just remember if you didn't come you missed out !! I would like to also thank my fellow committee members for their help this year and all the staff at the Rugby Club Julia, Penny, Paula, Bridget and Ricky for their help and finally Dirk our Chairman who this year ran the Raffle and turned it into the most successful we have ever had. For those of you who don't know Dirk is standing down this year due to his parole being revoked and he must return to Oz, he has certainly left some large shoes to be filled, Thank You Dirk you will be missed.

Performance of the Week : Martin Peters (Sheaf of Wheat)

Thursday 26th April 2007 -Week 30

So we reach the final week of this years competition with everything to play for, firstly the Cornish Arms 'B' played their posponed match with the Pool Club 'B' on tuesday the 24th and basically tied the league up with one game to go winning 8-4 away. Then on thursday they played the British Legion who in the opinion of many are the most improved team this season, but even the most improved team couldn't stop the Cornish 'B' from chalking up another 8-4 victory and finishing a very good season. The Cornish Arms 'A' in second couldn't afford any slip ups against the Pool Club 'A' with the Sheaf of Wheat only 4 points behind them at the start of play, and they did enough against the difficult Pool Club 'A' by winning 7-5 and holding on to 2nd place in the league. The Sheaf of Wheat had a small chance of stealing second but needed a solid performance and big victory but unfortunately they could only manage a 6-6 draw with the Queens Hotel but this was enough to keep them third. The Rugby Club in 5th must of liked their chances of taking 4th from the Legion who played the Cornish 'B', with an away trip to the Howards Hotel anything more than 4 points and they would move above the Legion into 4th but they could only manage a disappointing 9-3 loss, well played the Howards. The Pool Club 'B' took the long trip to the Engine Inn and probably wished they hadn't bothered as they ended up on the wrong side of an 8-4, an improvement this season by the Engine Inn I think. The Croft Played host to the bottom of the table Golden LIon 'A' and red faced rolled over and let the Lion 'A' have their biggest win of probably the last 3 seasons let alone this one a 10-2 , a dreadful performance by the Croft worthy of worst performance of the season. The Reef Bar took on the Golden Lion 'B' at the Lion and raced into a 9-0 lead finally ending up winning 10-2 and ending the season on a high note.

Most Singles Wins : Martin Peters (Sheaf of Wheat) / Roger Davies (Sheaf of Wheat) equal

Most Doubles WIns : Larry Andrews (Rugby Club)

Overall Champion : Martin Peters (Sheaf of Wheat)

Performance of the Week : Golden Lion 'A'

Thursday 19th April 2007 - Week 29

After the penultumate week for this season its still all to play for with all competitons, apart from the League which barring a disaster of biblical proportions is all over, still undecided and all could change hands on the last week depending on individual performances. The Cornish Arms 'B' had the long trip this week out to the Engine Inn and did enough winning 7-5 putting themselves 8 points in front with a game in hand and next weeks last match to come, surely they will secure the 5 points they need over these two games. The Cornish Arms 'A' in second seem to be faultering as they fight to stay second losing heavily to the Rugby Club 8-4 and next weeks away game to the Pool Club 'A' could be a very tense affair. The Sheaf of Wheat in third went away to the Croft and kept the pressure on with a 7-5 win against a full strength Croft side and closed the gap to second place to just 4 points and gave themselves a chance of nicking 2nd if they can get a good result next week against the Queens. The British Legion, who in my opinion are most improved team this season, put the disappointment of last week behind them and demolished the Pool Club 'B' 9-3 a very impressive display indeed. The Pool Club 'A' welcomed the Howards Hotel and went about beating them in a convincing 8-4 victory another team that are dangerous when they turn up with their competitve heads on. The Reef Bar who over the last few weeks have been in good form must of suffered from having last week off as they visited the Three Ferrets and could only manage a 6-6 draw. The Queens Hotel went away to the Golden Lion and managed to find the Golden Lion 'A' right in form as they beat the Queens 8-4, and Golden Lion 'B' had the night off as they were due to play the Halsetown Inn.

Performance of the Week : Rugby Club

Thursday 12th April 2007 - Week 28

Sorry for the very late update for this week but I have experienced some technical difficulties in the past week (couldn't find the on / off switch) so you get the added bonus of two updates in a week. First on Thursday we said goodbye to Reg Hart, who I am sure will be missed greatly by all in the League and all those that were present will agree it was a fitting and moving tribute to such a well loved man. In the circumstances the League leading Cornish Arms 'B', Reg's Team, did not play and the game is due to be replayed against the Pool Club 'B' in the next couple of weeks. The other significant league news of the week is that the Halsetown Inn have dropped out of the League which means as per league rules all results Team, Individual and Doubles have been removed and the League and Stats have been updated to show this. The Cornish Arms 'A' played at home against the Howards Hotel and surprisingly struggled to a 7-5 win which in truth probably ended any chance of them being able to catch the Cornish Arms 'B'. The Sheaf of Wheat continued their good season with a excellent 9-3 win against the bottom of the table Golden Lion 'A' , with both Martin Peters and Roger davies keeping up their bids for the Singles title this year. The Rugby Club played the Pool Club 'A' and let slip the chance to keep the pressure up on the Sheaf by losing 8-4 at home a disappointing result for them in a very close League behind the top two. The British Legion were suffering from travel sickness this week as they travelled out to the Engine Inn and got beaten 7-5 their worst reult for weeks. The Croft played away to the Queens at the Lifeboat badly affected by Holidays and sickness but take nothing away from the Queens who did a great job of winning 8-4. The Reef Bar were due to play the Halsetown Inn so didn't play and the Golden Lion 'B' hosted the Three Ferrets and as to form had a unpredictable night losing 7-5.

Performance of the Week : Sheaf of Wheat

This is a very sad week for the St Ives and District Pool League with the news that Reg Hart passed away after a long illness on Wednesday morning the 4th April. For those of you who knew Reg will all know that he masterminded the success of the Cornish Arms 'B' side over the last couple of years and before that the Primrose Valley Hotel, Liberties and Croft 'B' captaining and playing in 10 title winning sides over the years. Reg also played a big part in the running and administration of the League holding several positions on the committee including Chairman a position he put his heart and soul into, without Reg I can honestly say that we would not be playing Pool in this league today. Over the years he made good use of his family with several of them playing a big part in his teams and today Dave and Peter still play for the Cornish Arms 'B', but I'm sure everyone who played for Reg will tell you he treated all of them as part of his family and took great pleasure from every victory they secured. We will all miss Reg and his wonderful attitude to this league and I'm sure everyone will join me in sending their best wishes and sympathy to Reg's family. Finally may I just say we will all miss Reg's immortal words that he would utter during every match " Cue down Son".

Reg's funeral is on thursday 12th April 2007 at 11:00am, Bedford Road Church.

Thursday 5th April 2007 - Week 27

The league continues on with three matches left to play but unfortunately without the Halsetown Inn who have failed to turn up for two matches in succession and according to league rules have been removed from the league. This also means that all records relating to them have also been removed in accordance with League rules including individual and doubles results, so please take note of all the new stats and league positions. Anyway on with the league for this week, the Cornish Arms 'B' played a difficult match away to the Queens Hotel and came away with a 7-5 victory an outstanding effort on behalf of them all due to recent circumstances. The 2nd placed Cornish Arms 'A' waited for the Halsetown Inn to turn up and waited and waited and waited, thanks for waiting Duncan before ringing to let me know. The Rugby Club welcomed the Golden Lion 'B' and a right old ding dong followed with a very close match ending in a 6-6 draw. The Sheaf of Wheat in 4th visited the 5th placed British Legion and unsurprisily a close game followed with another 6-6 draw. The Pool Club 'B' went away to the Croft who are very under strength at the moment with players on holiday, and surprisily the Croft managed a 7-5 victory a shock result indeed. The Pool Club 'A' hosted the 2nd bottom 3 Ferrets and made short work of them stopping their recent good form with a 9-3 win. The Reef Bar continued their good run of form away at the Howards Hotel with a very good 8-4 win, and the Engine went away to the bottom placed Golden Lion 'A' and disappointingly only managed a 6-6 draw, with Rob Stevens getting an 8 Ball. Please note next sunday is the Doubles Knockouts.

Performnace of the Week : Cornish Arms 'B'

Thursday 29th March 2007 - Week 26

Another week nearer the end of the season and the start of the Knockouts with the first round of the singles taking place last sunday things are geting busy in the St Ives Pool League. So too league buisness and the league leaders and defending champions the Cornish Arms 'B' had a visit from bottom of the table Golden Lion 'A', and a predictable result with the Cornish winning easily 9-3 putting themselves 21 points clear at the top and realistically out of sight with 4 games to play. The chasing Cornish Arms 'A' had a difficult away game against the in form Reef Bar and had to dig deep winning 3 out of 4 doubles frames to come away with a draw but again conceding ground to the Cornish Arms 'B'. The Rugby Club had an interesting trip out to the Halsetown Inn to find out when they got there that the Halsetown had no team even when playing at home, so they receive their average win plus 2 points a total of 9 points this week. The Sheaf of Wheat hosted thw Engine Inn and made the most of the night by demolishing them 10-2 the Sheafs biggest win of the season, a good time to hit top form with 4 games to go. The British Legion visited the out of sorts Croft and made good use of this by winning all 4 doubles frames and coming away with an 8-4 victory, again a good time to hit form. With only seven points separating 2nd to 5th place the race for second isn't over yet and added to this the Rugby Club in 3rd still have play the Cornsh Arms 'A' in second, ther could be some nail biting to be done before the end of the season. The Pool Club 'B' who started the season so well have hit some hard times lately and things didn't get any easier this week with a visit from the Queens Hotel and a 6-6 draw. The Pool Club 'A' took their recent good form to the Golden Lion 'B' hoping to carry on the recent improvement, but in a tight game neither side took any advantage and it ended all square at 6-6 probably a fair result. The Howards Hotel took a trip to second bottom Three Ferrets who over recent weeks have been trying to close the gap on the teams above them, and again this week the Ferrets put up a great show by winning 8-4 and moving to only 3 points from 3rd from bottom and out of the play off zone an excelent effort.

Performance of the Week : Three Ferrets

Thursday 22nd March 2007 - Week 25

Another slightly late update but with good reason this week due to the Knockout draws being done, keep your eyes peeled over the next few days as the draws will appear here on the website. Right down to last weeks action the league leading Cornish Arms 'B' played host to the Sheaf of Wheat who are still in the hunt for 2nd place, after the singles the Sheaf were sitting pretty winning 5-3 but the Cornish 'B' true to form dug deep and made a clean sweep of the doubles to scrape home 7-5 and win their 20th game of the season. The second place Cornish Arms 'A' visited the second bottom 3 Ferrets and I guess would of hoped for a good result to try and close the gap on the Cornish 'B' as they rapidly run out of matches but they could only manage a 7-5 surely now second is what they have to try an defend. The Rugby Club in third were at home to the vastly improved Reef Bar a tough match in which they needed to win to keep the pressure on the Cornish 'A' in second, well they did win but only 7-5 and stay 9 points behind 2nd place. The British Legion who are also chasing 2nd place entertained the Queens Hotel and again weer looking for points to close that gap, the Queens were beaten 8-4 and the Legion join the Rugby Club on 176 points 9 points behind the Cornish 'A'. The Pool Club 'B' had on paper an easy away game to the bottom of the table Golden Lion 'A' but managed to come away with a 6-6 draw, very disappointing. The Croft took the trip out to the wilds to play the Engine Inn and shot to a 6-2 lead in the singles, but credit to the Engine who fought back and won 3 out of 4 doubles to only lose 7-5. The Pool Club 'A' made the Halsetown Inn very welcome and then proceeded to massacre them by winning 11-1, quite a performance especially without inspirational leader Dirk Lengton our beloved Chairman. The Howards Hotel welcomed the Golden Lion 'B' and as of late put in another solid performance winning 8-4 moving themselves above the Golden Lion 'B'.

Performance of the Week : Pool Club 'A'

Thursday 15th March 2007 - Week 24

Aplogies to everyone especially Paul for the lateness of this update but here it comes and some extra reading this week for you all. The Cornish Arms 'B' visited the Croft which is always a competitive game between these two and it turned out this way in the singles which the Cornish edged 5-3, then came the doubles and again it was close with the Cornish only securing their 7-5 victory by winning the last two doubles frames. The Cornish Arms 'A' entertained the Golden Lion 'B' and would of hoped to close the gap at the top by beating the Lion 'B' but had to win 3 out of 4 doubles frames to secure a 7-5 win and make no headway against the Cornish 'B'. The Legion also had chances to close the gap by playing the bottom of the table Golden Lion 'A' away and this they did by winning 9-3 a good away result and another 2 points closer to the Cornish Arms 'A'. The Sheaf of Wheat were away to the Pool Club 'B' who recently have been very out of sorts but surprisingly raised their game against the Sheaf and won 7-5 with a very strong 3 out of 4 doubles wins. The Rugby Club who can be unpredictable also had an away game at the 2nd to bottom Ferrets, a chance to make up some ground on the teams in front of them, and they did but must of been disappointed with only an 8-4 win. The Pool Club 'A' made the long journey to the Reef Bar and must of lost some players along the way as they were soundly beaten 9-3 by a rapidly improving Reef Bar side who have put together some very good performances in rceent weeks. The Engine came into town to visit the recently moved Queens Hotel who are now playing out of the Lifeboat Inn and found the Queens more than at home in their new venue, with the Queens winning 8-4. The Howards also had a long journey like the Engine but this time to the Halsetown Inn, but it turned out to be a very profitable trip with an excellent 8-4 win a good result in the cramped conditions at the Halsetown.

Performance of the Week : Reef Bar

Thursday 8th March 2007 - Week 23

This week saw the runaway leaders the Cornish Arms 'B' visit the lowly Three Ferrets and in traditional compassionate mood they hammered the poor Ferrets 10-2 winning all the singles and only relenting in the doubles, surely now they will noy be caught. The Cornish Arms 'A' in second took on the third place Sheaf of Wheat in the fight for second and after a very tight game the Cornish Arms 'A' won the last doubles frame to snatch a 7-5 win and keep them firmly in second place by nine points, will this be enough to stay there to the end of the season. The Rugby Club hosted the Croft, traditionally a very tight and highly competitive match it didn't disappoint, after a close game it rolled out a 6-6 draw a better result for the Croft as they could only muster 7 players due to illness and injury. The British Legion travelled away to the Halsetown Inn who surprising managed a 7-5 victory, is the Legion's fantastic season starting to slowly fall apart? hopefully not as this young team has done really well this season and deserve to finish high in the table. The Pool Club 'B' made the long journey to play the Reef Bar and after their great start to the season they have really hit a dull patch this season and nothing changed as they went down 7-5 to the Reef Bar . The Pool Club 'A' hosted the Queens Hotel who are now playing out of the Lifeboat Inn due to recent circumstances, and the move seems to have inspired them as they steam rollered the Pool Club 'A' 8-4 which keeps them in touch with thr Reef Bar above them. The Golden Lion 'B' welcomed the Engine Inn and once again must of overdone the happy juice because the Engine left with a very healthy 8-4 win, the Howards Hotel played the bottom of the table Golden Lion 'A' and helped themselves to a handy 9-3 victory.

Performance of the Week : The Croft

Thursday 1st March 2007 - Week 22

This was the week that the Cornish Arms 'A' where hoping to close that gap at the top by beating the Cornish Arms 'B' and they did by the closest of margins 7-5, not really enough to close the gap but a defeat for the long unbeaten Cornish Arms 'B' in fact their first in 6 weeks. The third place British Legion also had the incentive to produce a good result to close on the second place while the top two scrapped with each other, but were humbled at home by the Pool Club 'A' who went 5-0 up and finished 8-4 winners. The Rugby Club in fourth went away to the other Pool Club team the 'B' side and had to scrap it out in the doubles to get a 6-6 draw, winning 3 out of 4 Doubles after losing the singles 5-3. The Sheaf of Wheat hosted the unpredictable Golden Lion 'B' and once agian they were unpredictable and collapsed in the end losing all 4 doubles and the game 9-3, this result launches the Sheaf back into third in the league 7 points behind the Cornish Arms 'A' with a game against them next week. The Croft were visited by the second bottom Three Ferrets and after a bit of a struggle in the singles won all 4 doubles to win 8-4, including a very rare singles and doubles win for stand in captain Andy Livermore who is having a mare this season. The Howards Hotel had probably the longest trip with an away game at the Engine Inn and must of been enjoying it after the Howards roared into a 4-0 lead then it got to 6-3 but they couldn't finish off the Engine Inn who fought back winning the last three doubles to draw 6-6. The Queens played the Reef Bar and came away with a good thumping losing 8-4, watch this space for news regarding the Queen's Hotel as the place has been sold apparently. Finally the bottom of the table Golden Lion 'A' welcomed the Halsetown Inn and for only the second time this season the Golden Lion 'A' managed to win a game, they beat the Halsetown Inn 7-5 closing the gap on the 3 Ferrets above them to only 3 points.

Performance of the Week : Golden Lion 'A'

Thursday 22nd February 2007 - Week 21

So we move on and the Cornish Arms 'B' continue onwards towards the title, can anyone stop their march forward, this week it was the turn of the Golden Lion 'B'. Unsurprisly the Cornish Arms 'B' marched into a 6-0 lead and eventually ran out 9-3 winners, they have been unstoppable in the last 5 or 6 weeks. The Cornish Arms 'A' hosted the unpredictable Croft and went 3-1 up but ended up 4-4 after the singles, eventually running out 7-5 winners but dropping another 2 points to the 'B' side. The third place d Rugby Club where at home to the Queens and had to win all the doubles to win 7-5 with Jonathan Peters clearing for an 8 Ball in one doubles frame. The British Legion visited the Reef Bar and continued their excellent season by winning 9-3 and taking themselves back into third place again, very impressive but can they catch the Cornish Arms 'A' maybe with the Cornish teams playing each other next week. The Pool Club 'B' visited the Three Ferrets who they beat 12-0 in the first fixture at the Pool Club, but great credit goes to the Ferrets who this time round held them to a 6-6 draw, an excellent result considering the last meeting. The Sheaf of Wheat who have struggled a bit in the last few weeks had a trip to Carbis Bay and the Howards Hotel and came back with a 9-3 win including a 8 Ball clearance for Martin Peters in the doubles. The Pool Club 'A' played host to the bottom of the table Golden Lion 'A' and were run close by the bottom side only winning 7-5, it looks like both bottom sides are trying to make a fight of it. Finally the out of town derby between the Engine Inn and Halsetown Inn was won 7 -5 by the Engine.

Performance of the Week : Three Ferrets

Thursday 15th Februrary 2007 - Week 20

So we are now two thirds of the way through the season with 20 out of 30 games played and the Cornish Arms 'B' played host to the Howards Hotel. The Howards will be disappointed after their recent form to go down to a thumping 11-1 defeat as the Cornish Arms 'B' tighten their grip on the title, me thinks only a disater of biblical proportions can now stop them retaining their title. The Cornish Arms 'A' travelled to the Pool Club 'B', which on paper looked a cracking match. the Cornish raced into a 3-0 lead but were pegged back by the Pool Club with the singles ending up 4-4. The Pool Club 'B' then pressed home their home advantage winning 3 out of 4 doubles frames running out 7-5 winners, and from the reports it was an excellent match all round but the Cornish 'A' dropped 6 points to the Cornish 'B'. The 3rd placed Legion hosted the 4th placed Rugby Club and with just 1 point between them it was a crucial game, and it was nip and tuck all the way through the singles ending up 4-4. Then the doubles and the Rugby Club made their bid for the game winning 3 out of 4 frames and winning the game 7-5 which now leapfrogs them into 3rd in front of the Legion by 1 point. With the Rugby Club and Legion up against each other the Sheaf of Wheat had a chance to take advantage with a home game against the out of form Halsetown Inn, but they could only manage a 6-6 after losing 3 out of 4 doubles frames ( this seemed very popular this week !!) The very out of form Croft were at home to the Golden Lion 'B' and after recent results anything could of happened and it did, after the Lion going 2-0 up the Croft stormed back and only lost 1 more frame running out 9-3 winners, if only the Croft could get it together like that every week........ The Pool Club 'A' had the longest trip of the week out to the Engine Inn an 8th versus 9th clash and returned with a 7-5 win not a bad result that keeps them in front of the Engine by 4 points. The Queens had a visit from 2nd bottom team the Three Ferrets and narrowly beat them 7-5, bottom of the table Golden lion 'A' played host to the Reef Bar and lost 9-3 keeping them bottom by 5 points. After last years AGM and the new rule changes regarding play offs for the bottom teams the Three Ferrets and Golden Lion 'A' are looking very precarious with the Ferrets 10 points from safety and the Lion 'A' 15 points fom safety, some good results needed by both teams to get them out of the BROWN STUFF!!!!

Performance of the Week : The Croft

Thursday 8th February 2007 - Week 19

So as we continue onwards we reach the coldest week of the season so far and the Cornish Arms 'B' had to endure a chilly trip to the Halsetown Inn. As has been the case of recent weeks they soon warmed up and set about blazing a trail to a 9-3 victory on one of the most difficult tables in the league, and extra plaudits to Dave Hart who had an 8 ball clearance in the doubles. The Cornish Arms 'A' stayed at home and entertained the Queens Hotel hoping to close the gap on their 'B' side, but the Queens put up a brave fight and managed to hold them to a 8-4 win meaning they lose another point on the league leaders. The Sheaf of Wheat had an away game at th Pool Club against the unpredictable Pool Club 'A', and once again the Pool Club 'A' surprised everyone and won 7-5 against the high flying Sheaf winning 3 out of the 4 doubles and drwing the singles 4-4. The Pool Club 'B' visited the Golden Lion 'B' and going on recent form anything could of happened.... and it did, the Golden Lion 'B' won all 4 doubles to run out 7-5 winners a great and I would guess drunken effort. The Rugby Club opened its doors up to the bottom of the table Golden Lion 'A' and had soon cruised to a 7-0 lead, finally running out 9-3 winners against the leagues bottom side. The most improved team of this year the British Legion visited the 2nd to bottom of the table Three Ferrets and well how can I put it blew them away with an extremely impressive 11-1 victory which has pushed them up into 3rd behind the Cornish Arms 'A'. The Croft who have this year found it hard to cope with the loss of 3 of their top players from last season went away to the Howards Hotel, ....... and were sent packing again with their tails firmly between their legs after being soundly beaten 9-3. The Engine Inn had long journey into town to visit the team directly below them in the league... the Reef Bar and left again with an 8-4 win putting the Queens Hotel between them and the Reef Bar and moving them into 9th.

Performance of the Week : Howards Hotel

Thursday 1st Februrary 2007 - Week 18

As the season continues there seems to be a trend developing, the Cornish Arms 'B' sweeping past everyone who takes them on. This week it was the turn of the Pool Club 'A' who had been playing quite well in recent weeks and putting in some good performances, but the Cornish Arms 'B' swept them aside with a crushing 10-2 win and cemented their place at the top of the table. The chasing Cornish Arms 'A' who are currently second went away to the British Legion, who must go down as the most improved team this season, and lost 7-5 opening up an 8 point gap between themselves and the Cornish 'B'. The Sheaf of Wheat started this week in third and hosted the unpredictable Reef Bar, the Sheaf scraped a narrow 7-5 victory after having to win 3 out of 4 doubles frames, narrowing the gap to 9 points behind the Cornish Arms 'A'. The Pool Club 'B' who in recent weeks have gone of the rails after their promising start entertainted the Howards Hotel, and put their season back on track a bit after beating the Howards 9-3 including winning all 4 doubles frames, this now puts them on 128 points level with the Sheaf of Wheat. The Rugby Club took the longest journey of the week out to the Engine Inn, and obviously don't suffer from travel sickness as they came away with a 9-3 victory including for the second week running a clean sweep of all 4 doubles frames, this places them 2 points behind the Sheaf of Wheat and Pool Club 'B'. The Croft were at home to the Halsetown Inn who have struggled for a team in recent weeks, but they turned up with their players and were dispatched 9-3 by the in and out of form Croft. The Queens Hotel who are again one of the most improved teams of the season played the Golden Lion 'B' at home, and the Golden Lion managed to win 7-5, a good result for the Lion 'B' who are very unpredictable and tend play better when consuming less alcohol !!!!! Finally we come to the clash of the two bottom teams in the league the Golden Lion 'A' and the 3 Ferrets, this titanic clash took place at the Golden Lion and saw the Lion 'A' race into a 5-0 lead in the singles, then the beer kicked in and the 3 Ferrets won the next 5 frames bringing it back to 5-5 with two to play. Finally it ended up as a 6-6 draw with that cunning old fox Jimbo of the Ferrets and his captain Stuart winning the last doubles frame to ensure that the Ferrets were unbeaten against the Golden Lion 'A' in the bottom of the table clash.

Performance of the Week : The 3 Ferrets

Thursday 25th January 2007 - Week 17

So the quest continues this week with the Cornish Arms 'B' taking an away trip to the Reef Bar and unsurprisingly coming away with a 9-3 win and really turning the screw against the teams chasing them, this gives them an average of 8 points a game both home and away .... very impessive !! The Cornish Arms 'A' still chasing hard were at home to the bottom side in the league the Golden Lion 'A' and dispatched them accordingly with a 10-2 win, closing the gap between them and the Cornish 'B' to 3 points... game on. The third place Sheaf of Wheat visited the Rugby Club and lost for the first time this season 7-5, losing all 4 doubles frames after being 5-3 up after the singles. The Pool Club 'B' who have been rocking in the last few weeks were away to the Halsetown Inn and continued their poor run of form with a 6-6 draw, although it is a difficult place to go away to and win. The British Legion who have also recently been a bit in and out after their excellent start to the season made the trip down into town to take on the Golden Lion 'B', and must of been really pleased that they did coming away with an excellent 11-1 victory. The Croft visited the Pool Club and League Chairman Dirk for a real middle of the table clash and it proved to be that way all the way through with the Pool Club running out 7-5 winners in a very close game. The Queens Hotel who are proving to be a much better team this season went away to the Howards Hotel and managed to lose 3 out of the 4 doubles and go down 7-5 to the eratic Howards and finally the Engine Inn and 3 Ferrets played out a draw at the Ferrets, moving the Ferrets clear of the bottom side the Golden Lion 'A'.

Performance of the Week : British Legion

Thursday 18th January 2007 - Week 16

So we reach halfway and look forward to the reverse fixtures in the second half of the season, this when the competition really starts. The league leading Cornish Arms 'B' entertained the Rugby Club, a hard fixture against the strong at home Cornish Arms 'B', and well the Cornish 'B' basically hammered them 10-2. This seems like a statement of intent by the Cornish Arms 'B', throwing down the gauntlet to the rest of the league and saying come and try to take our title away. The Cornish Arms 'A' who were second at the turn around went away to the Engine Inn and did their best to keep on the heels of their B side by winning 9-3. The third placed Pool Club 'B' played their 'A' side and suffered their second heavy defeat in two weeks going down 8-4, the wheels seem to have come off in the last couple of weeks for the Pool Club 'B'. Just a word for the Pool Club 'A' and Dirk our chairman, again pulling out an excellent result when least expecting it, that's what makes our league such fun.. The Sheaf of Wheat played host to Three Ferrets who are hovering just above the bottom place in the league, and the Sheaf took full advantage of the position winning 9-3 and still being the only team not to lose a game this season. The British Legion who have slipped down the table a bit in the last few weeks welcomed the Howards Hotel and fought their way to a 6-6 draw against the tricky Howards side, the Croft also at home welcomed the Reef Bar who have recently found some form and continued their good run beating the Croft 7-5.. The Golden Lion 'B' played the Golden Lion 'A' who are sitting bottom of the league and this result probably shows why as the Golden Lion 'B' thumped them 9 -3 to ensure they stay firmly rooted to the bottom of the table. Unfortunately the Halsetown Inn failed to fulfil their fixture against the Queens Hotel who are awarded a 9-0 victory.

Performance of the Week : Cornish Arms 'B'

Thursday 11th January 2007 - Week 15

Well this turned out to be a real interesting week with some real interesting scores !!!! So we start with the league leaders the Cornish Arms 'B' and their trip to the British Legion, and well a sensational result for the Legion an 8-4 win winning 3 out of the 4 doubles and 5 singles. So the Pool Club 'B' had a chance to close the gap with a home game against the Engine Inn, amazingly they also crashed to their biggest defeat of the season with the Engine Inn winning by a very convincing 9-3, an excellent result away from home. So we move to the Cornish Arms 'A' who played host to the Pool Club 'A' and closed the gap on the Cornish 'B' by winning 7-5. The Rugby Club also managed to close the gap on the top teams with a convincing win at home against the Howards Hotel running out 9-3 winners to go one point behind the Pool Club 'B'. The Sheaf of Wheat needed to come up with the goods against the Queens Hotel to stay in the race at the top and they didn't disappoint with a nice 8-4 victory meaning just 9 points separate the top 5 teams. The Croft went away to the bottom of the table Golden Lion 'A' and struggled big time to get away with a 7-5 win after losing the first 3 frames in the singles. The Golden Lion 'B' went away to the Reef Bar and got their butts kicked all the way back losing by a crushing 10-2 a poor result considering both teams form of late and finally the 3 Ferrets visited the Halsetown Inn and almost came away with the draw but lost 7-5 keeping them just 1 point off the bottom of the table.

Performance of the Week : Engine Inn

Thursday 4th January 2007 - Week 14

Well I hope Santa delivered and you had a good Christmas and New Year but back to the almost serious buisness of the Pool. The Cornish Arms 'B' kicked off 2007 at home against the Engine Inn, and I do believe they are serious about retaining their title as they trounced the Engine 9-3, definitely no Christmas hangovers at the Cornish 'B'. The Pool Club 'B' were also at home playing the much improved British Legion, on paper and going by recent results a close result you would think, but obviously the Pool Club 'B' boys have been in training over Christmas and won comfortably 8-4 after being 3-1 down in the singles. The Cornish Arms 'A' went away to the Rugby Club which is possibly one of the hardest away games in the league and well basically demolished them 9-3, Mark Stratton pitched in with the first 8 Ball of the year in the doubles and the Cornish Arms 'A' look like they want to be included in the race for the title this year. The Sheaf of Wheat played host to the Croft and a very close game followed ending 6-6 after the Sheaf won the last 2 doubles to draw, the Pool Club 'A' had a disappointing away game against the Howards Hotel who ended up winning 8 -4, that's just 5 out of a possible 24 points for the Pool Club 'A'. The Queens Hotel hosted the Golden Lion 'A' and continued their good form to win 9-3, the Reef Bar squeezed out a 7-5 home win against the Three Ferrets who are adrift at the bottom with the Golden Lion 'A'. Unfortunately the Halsetown Inn couldn't managed to raise a team to play the Golden Lion 'B' this week so the Lion 'B' get their average win plus 2 points, a total of 9 points this week.

Performance of the Week : Cornish Arms 'A'

Thursday 14th December 2006 - Week 13

Well the final games before the Christmas break saw the top two in the league take each other on at the Cornish Arms, it tuned out to be a real close affair. The singles were split 4-4 and then the first doubles was won with an 8 Ball clearance by Ian Noall of the Pool Club 'B' before the Cornish Arms dug deep and won the next 3 doubles to make it 7 - 5 to take them 5 points clear at the top and claim the Christmas No1 spot with 103 points. The Cornish Arms 'A' visited the nearby Howards Hotel and kept the pressure on the top 2 by winning by an impressive 10-2 dropping one singles frame and one doubles frame and moving them to a point behind the Pool Club 'B' in 3rd place. The Sheaf of Wheat went away to the Golden Lion to play the Lion 'A' side and also kept the pressure on with a steady 8 - 4 victory, leaving the Golden Lion 'A' 1 point off the bottom of the table after 10 straight defeats. The British Legion played host to the much improved Engine Inn who won the last 2 doubles to sneak an impressive 7-5 win away from home, this pushed the legion into 6th place their lowest position so far this season. The Croft were at home to the Queens Hotel which looked on paper a pretty even match after recent form, but The Croft managed to string a performance together and win 9-3, winning all 4 doubles in the process. The Pool Club 'A' hosted the Rugby Club and seemed to have already got the Christmas spirit (or drunk it) and showed goodwill to all men and allowed the Rugby Club to steam roller them 11-1moving them into 4th place, a real heavy defeat before Christmas for the Pool Club 'A'. The Reef Bar visited the Halsetown Inn on an away day and came away with an equally impressive 8-4 victory considering their form of late, more goodwill from the Halsetown as Christmas grows near. The Final game for this week saw the Golden Lion 'B' walk round the corner and visit the 3 Ferrets, the ferrets started off well winning the singles 5-3, but saw the Lion 'B' roar back and win all doubles to take the match 7-5 and leave the 3 Ferrets holding up the rest for Christmas. In the singles competition Simon 'Sky' Pollard of the Rugby leadswith 11 wins, in the doubles Larry Andrews (Rugby Club) and Martin Peters (Sheaf of Wheat) hold the lead jointly also with 11 wins and in the overall competition Martin Peters leads with 22 wins.

Performance of the Week : Rugby Club

Thursday 7th December 2006 - Week 12

With one week to go before the Christmas break he Cornish Arms 'B' are making a bid for the Christmas No1, this week they entertained the Queens Hotel who have been causing a few problems for their opponents recently. The Cornish Arms 'B' took no notice of the Queens improved form this season and thumped them 9-3 winning all four doubles, a very good performance by the defending league champs. Second place Pool Club 'B' took on the very out of form Croft at the Pool Club starting brightly and winning the first two singles but the Croft dug deep and managed a 4-4 at the end of the singles. In some very close doubles games the Pool Club 'B' shaded the result 7-5, but that now leaves them 3 points adrift in second place. The Cornish Arms 'A' had, on recent form, a fairly comfortable away game at the Halsetown Inn but were left nursing their wounds after the Halsetown turned it on and won 8-4, certainly a turn up for the books and an improvement in form from the Halsetown Inn. The 4th placed British Legion went away to the 5th placed Sheaf of Wheat, both chasing the 3 teams above them and both in good form, something had to give. The Sheaf of Wheat took the bull by the horns and made good use of their home advantage running out 8-4 winners and jumping above the British Legion in the table. The Rugby Club who have had a bit of an in and out season visited the Golden Lion 'B' looking to stay in touch with the teams above them, the Golden Lion 'B' offered very little resistance and only managed to win 3 frames losing 9-3 with Larry Andrews of the Rugby Club sinking an Eight Ball in the singles The Pool Club 'A' visited the Three Ferrets, who have improved in the last few weeks, and came away with a 7-5 victory making League Chairman Dirk very happy as this moves them up one place in the league above the Croft. The Engine Inn hosted the Golden Lion 'A' and must of been very happy to see them considering they thumped the Lion 'A' 10-2, this by far their best result of the season and moves them up a place above the Queens Hotel. The Howards Hotel took a trip to the drastically out of form Reef Bar who in the last four weeks have taken 11 points out of a possible 48, and with only 2 points between the sides at the start of the match it stayed that way at the end with the teams drawing 6-6. Next week sees a mouthwatering clash just before Christmas with !st playing 2nd and the Christmas No1 up for grabs, you could'nt make this script up if you tried pure excitement !!!

Performance of the Week : Sheaf of Wheat

Thursday 30th November 2006 - Week 11

Another very competitive week making it very tight at the top of the table, there are now only 11 points from the first place team to the team in sixth. First up last weeks league leaders the Pool Club 'B' had a tricky away match to the much improved Queens Hotel , they narrowly won the singles 5 - 3 then had to win the last doubles frame to snatch a 7 - 5 win. The Cornish Arms 'B' who were 1 point behind going into this week also had an away match just across the road against the Golden Lion 'A', they took full advantage of the Lion's recent poor form winning comfortably 9 - 3. The Cornish Arms 'A' side were at home to the out of salts Reef Bar who haven't won for the last 5 weeks, and they certainly took advantage of the Reef Bar's poor form by inflicting the Reef's largest defeat this season a thumping 10 - 2 victory which moves them within 4 points of the league Leaders. The British Legion had on paper a tricky home game against the Croft, but the Croft once again failed to put up much of a fight against a much improved and confident Legion side and slipped to their second biggest defeat of the season losing 8 - 4 which keeps the Legion nicely in touch with the 3 teams at the top. The Sheaf of Wheat had a trip out to the Engine Inn and were obviously sufferring from travel sickness losing the first 2 singles frames but held it together and put in a solid performance to leave with a 7 - 5 win but saw Martin Peters lose his second singles game after winning 9 on the bounce. The Rugby Club who started the week in sixth place played host to the Halsetown Inn who have lost their last 2 games 7 -5, and true to form they managed to keep the sequence going and lost 7 - 5 again even though the Rugby Club had to win the last 2 doubles. The Pool Club 'A' were at home against the Golden Lion 'B' and started strongly winning the first 3 singles but then managed to lose the next 3, after that it became a win one lose one type of game with the Pool Club 'A' sneaking the game 7 - 5. Finally the Howards Hotel entertained the bottom side the 3 Ferrets, the Ferrets went mad in the singles and ended up leading 6 - 2 by the time it got the doubles but must of started celebrating a wee bit early because they went on to lose all 4 doubles and draw 6 - 6. There was only one 8 ball this week by Shane Eddy of the Cornish Arms 'B' that makes 3 for Shane so far this season.

Performance of the Week : Cornish Arms 'A'

Thursday 23rd november 2006 - Week 10

This week saw some very close matches with no one really taking advantage, The Cornish Arms 'B' visited the in form and in third place Sheaf of Wheat. Peter Hart of the Cornish 'B' ended the only unbeaten singles record by beating Martin Peters in the first frame and then the Cornish 'B' went on to win the singles 5-3, only then to lose the first 3 doubles frames meaning they had to win the last frame of doubles for a 6 - 6 draw. The Cornish Arms 'A' were the only team in the top six to gain any ground on the top two by winning 10 - 2 at home to the 3 Ferrets who are now firmly rooted to the bottom of the table, the Pool Club 'B' i'm sure will be disapointed only winning 7 - 5 at home to the Golden Lion 'A'. The Rugby Club had a good away win against the Reef Bar 9 - 3 which takes them up to 6th in front of the Croft who's form is very up and down at the moment, they lost at home 7 - 5 to the Engine Inn losing 3 out of 4 doubles. The Golden Lion 'B' managed a 7 - 5 win against the Howards Hotel but might be disadvantaged next week as captain Paul Beadnell has managed to injure his bridging hand whilst trolley surfing in Tesco's Car Park ( Pictures to follow shortly) . The Pool Club 'A' went away from home this week to the Halsetown Inn and came away with a credable 7 - 5 win, and the British Legion are still maintaining their good form with an away draw at the much improved Queens Hotel side.

Performance of the Week : Golden Lion 'A'

Thursday 16th November 2006 - Week 9

This week saw the Sheaf of Wheat host the Pool Club 'B' and a close game followed with the Sheaf of Wheat taking the singles 5 - 3, then the first two doubles were split before the Pool Club 'B' won the last two doubles to draw the game 6 - 6. Also this week saw the always lively game between the Cornish Arms 'B' and The Croft in which the Cornish won the singles 5 - 3 including an 8 ball from Shane Eddy, then they won the first doubles to go 6 - 3 up until The Croft dug deep and won the last 3 doubles to draw 6 - 6. The 3 Ferrets entertained the Rugby Club and lost narrowly 7 - 5 after drawing the singles 4 - 4, the Cornish Arms 'A' visited the Golden Lion 'B' and suprisingly on recent form came away 7 - 5 losers after losing three out of four doubles. The Halsetown Inn took a trip to the Howards Hotel and came away empty handed after losing 7 - 5, the British Legion continued their good form with a 9 - 3 home win against the Golden Lion 'A' obviously they mean buisness this year. The Queens Hotel took a trip out to the Engine Inn and drew 6 - 6 and probably the result of the night the Pool Club 'A' took on their close neighbours the Reef Bar and for want of a better expression hammered then 10 - 2, very impressive Dirk !!! The only unbeaten record went this week when Martin Peters of the Sheaf of Wheat lost in his doubles, but he is still undeafeated with 9 out of 9 singles wins. There are only four more League matches until Chrismas and the race for the Christmas number 1 is underway, will it be the Cornish Arms 'B', Pool Club 'B' or will an outsider race up on the blind side to surprise us all.

Performance of the Week : Pool Club 'A'

Thursday 9th November 2006 - Week 8

Apologies for the late update this week but had quite a lot on this weekend. Ok there have been some very closely fought games this week, with the league leaders the Pool Club 'B' playing their next door neighbours the Reef Bar and winning 8 - 4, a good result against the improving Reef Bar. The British Legion continued their very good start to the season with an 8 - 4 home win against the Halsetown Inn, who seem to have lost their good form from last season. The Queens Hotel drew 6 - 6 with the Pool Club 'A' who won the last three doubles to draw the game, quite a good fight back away from home. Last weeks 3rd and 4th placed teams the Cornish Arms 'A' and Sheaf of Wheat played out a 6 - 6 at the Sheaf with the Cornish Arms having to win the last three doubles to ensure the draw and the Engine and Golden Lion 'B' also drew 6 - 6 at the Engine. The Croft also won the last three doubles against the Rugby Club to win a very close game 7 - 5 with Lee Hall, of the Croft, unlucky not to get an Eight Ball in the last Doubles. The Howards Hotel had an away win 7 - 5 against the Golden Lion 'A' in another very tight match. The Cornish Arms 'B' and the Three Ferrets match was not played due to the Three Ferrets being unable to field a team so the Cornish were awarded a 10 - 0 win in accordance with rule 22 in the constitution, this sent them to the top of the table level on points with the Pool Club 'B' but with a better games won tally. Finally congratulations to Martin peters of the Sheaf of Wheat for keeping his undefeated run going in both the singles and doubles he has now played 8 frames of each and still has a 100% record.

Performance of the Week : Martin Peters (Sheaf of Wheat)

Thursday 2nd November 2006 - Week 7

Well this week saw the meeting of last years top two teams the Cornish Arms 'B' and the Cornish Arms 'A' and a very close game it turned out to be, the 'A' side winning the singles 5 - 3 and the 'B' side winning the doubles 3 -1 including the last two to make it a draw. With these two thrashing it out the Pool Club 'B' had a good chance to put a bit more distance between them and the second placed Cornish Arms 'B' but failed in a close game against the Rugby Club narrowly losing 7 -5, after splitting the singles 4 - 4 the Rugby Club won the next three doubles to ensure victory for them at home. The Sheaf of Wheat went away to the Golden Lion 'B' and came away with a good 8 - 4 win, with the only bright spot for the Lion 'B being captain Paul Beadnell's first singles victory in five games. The 3 Ferrets played host to The Croft and lost the first 10 frames narrowly missing out on a second 12 - 0 in 2 weeks, it ended up 10 - 2, just a word about the food thought what an excellent chilli !!!! The British Legion went quietly about their buisness away from home against the Pool Club 'A' winning 7 - 5 with a good doubles display and the Engine Inn also registered a good away win at the Howards Hotel another 7 - 5. The Queens Hotel beat the Reef Bar 7 - 5 and the Halsetown Inn put in a convincing performance against the Golden Lion 'A' winng 8 - 4. This means that the Cornish Arms 'B' are now only 2 points behind the Pool Club 'B' at the top and there are on;y 10 point between them and the 6th placed Rugby Club. In the singles there are 4 players with 7 out of 7 wins, in the doubles there is only one player with 7 wins and the same player Martin Peters of the Sheaf is the only undefeated player with 14 out of 14 wins overall.

Performance of the Week : The Croft

Thursday 26th October 2006 - Week 6

Well this week the action really warmed up with the top three teams all returning very good results and they have now started to pull away from the rest of the League. The League leaders the Pool Club 'B' played host to the 3 Ferrets and demolished them 12 - 0, the first of the season laying down the challenge to the teams following them. The Cornish Arms 'B' are still the only team to have won all 6 games so far this season and were never in trouble against the Golden Lion 'B' winning 10 - 2, Shane Eddy managed an 8 Ball in the singles against Lion 'B' captain Paul Beadnell who took full responsibity for Shane's efforts by losing the toss and not getting to the table. The Cornish Arms 'A' arguably had the best result away from home against the very out of form Croft winning 9 - 3 in a very clinical display of Pool winning the singles 6 - 2 and the Doubles 3 - 1. In the out of town local derby the Halsetown Inn visited the Engine Inn and came away winning 7 - 5 and the Pool Club 'A' managed the same result away from home against the Golden Lion 'A'. The Sheaf of Wheat were visited by the Howards Hotel and won the last doubles to squeeze a narrow 7 - 5 victory and the Rugby Club managed a very good 8 - 4 away from home win against the Queens Hotel. In a tight game the British Legion won the last two doubles against the Reef bar to force a draw continuing their recent good run of form. At the end of week 6 there are only 4 unbeaten singles players remaining, 5 undeated doubles players remaning and only Martin Peters of the Sheaf of Wheat has a hundred percent record of 12 wins in both competitions.

Performance of the Week : Cornish Arms 'A'

Thursday 19th October 2006 - Week 5

This week saw a top of the table clash between 1st place Pool Club 'B' and 3rd placed Cornish Arms 'A' and it didn't fail to provide the excitement either. The Pool Club 'B' raced into a 3 - 0 lead but the Cornish Arms 'A' on their own table fought back winning the last 3 to make it 4 - 4 at the end of the singles, they then went on to split the doubles with the Cornish Arms 'A' having to win the last frame to draw, a fine 6 - 6. The highlight of the game was an 8 ball clearance by Mark Stratton of the Cornish which I quote from the comments on the back of the sheet "Mark Stratton played one of the best and well constructed 8 Balls seen in the league, definately not straight forward". The Reef Bar played the Golden Lion 'A' and put their bad form of late behind them with a thunping 11 -1 victory and the Pool Club 'A' had a good 8 - 4 win against the Engine Inn. The British Legion only managed to draw 6 - 6 with the Rugby Club despite being 6 - 3 up at one point and Aaron Andrews having an 8 Ball in the singles, the Rugby Club boys dug deep and won the last 3 doubles to square the game. The Queens Hotel followed the trend of winning the last 3 doubles to come from behind to beat the 3 Ferrets 7 - 5 in another very close game and the Croft won the last doubles to secure a 7 - 5 win against the Golden Lion 'B' . The only team with a maximum 5 out of 5 wins the Cornish Arms 'B' did so with a good 9 - 3 win away at the Howards Hotel winning all 4 doubles in the process, the final game between the Sheaf of Wheat and the Halsetown Inn ended in a 6 - 6 draw despite the Sheaf winning the first 3 singles, they then had to win 3 out of 4 doubles to draw. After this weeks games there is now only 1 player with a maximum 5 singles and 5 doubles wins, Martn Peters of the Sheaf of Wheat , and ain't it just like it I said not many 8 balls this season and 2 come along in one week Mark Stratton (Cornish Arms 'A') and Aaron Andrews (Legion).

Performance of the Week : Reef Bar / Mark Stratton (Cornish Arms 'A')

Thursday 12th October 2006 - Week 4

Ok week 4 and the only two unbeaten teams continued their good start to the season with both playing at home and both taking good advantage of this. The Cornish Arms 'B' recorded a good 9 - 3 win against the Halsetown Inn including winning all 4 doubles equally the Pool Club 'B' had a 9 - 3 win against the Golden Lion 'B' winning all 4 doubles, the Golden Lion 'B's poor form at the start of this season must have captain Paul pulling his hair out. The Sheaf of Wheat continued their good form at the start of this season with a solid 8 - 4 win against the Pool club 'A' as did the Cornish Arms 'A' who beat the Queens away from home 8 - 4 . The British Legion got themselves back on track after last weeks disappointing result with a 9 - 3 win agaist the 3 Ferrets winning the singles 6 - 2 and the doubles 3 - 1, the Rugby Club also had a good 9 - 3 win away at the Golden Lion 'A'. The Howards Hotel managed to win the singles 5 - 3 against the Croft but failed to hold on and drew 6 - 6 in the end after a spirited fight back by the Croft in the Doubles, the Croft had some red faces in the singles especially Shaun and Dean (damn that middle pocket). Finally the Reef Bar went away to the Engine Inn and came away with a very closely fought 6 - 6 draw, surprisingly we still have only had the one Eight Ball this season. After 4 weeks we have the first week of stats and only 3 players remain undefeated winning all 8 games so far Chris Worrall (Croft), Martin Peters (Sheaf) and Simon Gill (Pool Club 'B'), there are 12 undeafeated Singles Players and 9 undefeated Doubles Players. If anyone would like to add any comments to this weekly report E mail me with tales off heroic snooker escapes, amazing pots, catastrophic misses,. over the top celebrations or cue breaking tantrums, to be included into the report you need to get your E mails in by 6pm on saturday following your League match.

Performance of the Week : British Legion

Thursday 5th October 2006 - Week 3

Well we start this week with the high flying British Legions trip to last years runners up the Cornish 'A', the Legion started by winning the first singles and then crashed to a 9 - 3 loss with the Cornish 'A' winning the singles 6 - 2 and the doubles 3 -1. The Pool Club 'B' continued their good form by winning 10 - 2 away at the Howards and becoming only one of two teams to remain undeafeated this season, and also move into top place in the league. The other undeafeated team the Cornish Arms 'B' struggled to a 7 - 5 win against the Pool Club 'A' losing 3 of the doubles games and just avoiding a 6 - 6 draw. The Croft went away to the Halsetown Inn and won 9 - 3 with Gary Hannah of the Halsetown winning his singles game without hitting a ball., the Sheaf of wheat also had a good 9 -3 win against the very out of form Reef Bar. The Engine Inn visited the Rugby Club and came away with a unlucky 7 - 5 defeat after winning the first 3 singles, and the Ferrets and Golden Lion 'A' also had a close game with the Golden Lion winning 7 - 5. Finally in the local derby for the week the Queens Hotel came out winners 7 - 5 against the Golden Lion 'B', the Queens held onto the advantage after winning the first 3 singles. Look out next week for the first posting of the player stats, after this week there are only 5 players that are undeafetd in both singles and doubles, and still only one 8 Ball.

Performance of the Week : Pool Club 'B'

Thursday 28th September 2006 - Week 2

So we get to week two and again the competion was fierce with some rather surprising results and early front runners. In a spectacular turn around from last week the Golden Lion 'B' who lost their first 3 frames last week then won the last 9 managed to do the complete opposite and win the first 3 then lose the last 9 against the high flying Legion, who have stormed to the top of the League with two 9 - 3 wins. The Pool Club 'B' are also continuing their good form from the end of last season with a convincing 9 - 3 win against the Halsetown Inn who are a pale shadow of the team that were around the top of the League for most of last season. The Croft managed to scrape a 7 - 5 win against the Pool Club 'A' by winning all the doubles after a good singles performance by the Pool Club 'A', with the highlight being Mike Morgan unluckily missing an 8 Ball against Richard Astle on the black. There was another good solid 8 - 4 win by the Cornish Arms 'B' at home against the Reef Bar, winning 6 singles and sharing the doubles. The Sheaf of Wheat played host to the Rugby club and they both played a very competitive 6 - 6 draw splitting both the doubles and singles evenly, the 3 Ferrets had a impressive 8 - 4 win away from home at the Engine Inn and the Queens Hotel and Howards Hotel managed a 6 - 6 draw. The Golden Lion 'A' had a good 6 - 6 draw at home against last years runners up the Cornish Arms 'A' with both teams again spliitng the singles and doubles evenly, there wasn't any 8 Balls recorded this week.

Performance of the Week : Britsh Legion

Thursday 21st September 2006 - Week 1

Well here we go again and the competition is already back to the high standards set last season with 4 of the 8 games being won 7-5. The first big clash of the season saw last years 4th place Rugby Club playing the reigning champions the Cornish Arms 'B' , the Cornish got off to a flyer winning the first 3 frames and ending the singles 6-2 up but the Rugby Club refused to give in and fought back winning the last 3 doubles to end up losing 7-5. The Golden Lion 'B' played host to the Golden Lion 'A' and started by losing the first 3 frames then won the next 9 to win 9-3, and the Legion went away to the Howards and won by the same score winning all 4 doubles in the process. Last years runners up the Cornish Arms 'A' managed a comfortable 8-4 win at home against the Engine Inn and the Sheaf of Wheat won by the same score away to the Three Ferrets with Sam Osborne getting the first 8 Ball clearance of this season in the singles. The Reef Bar managed a 7-5 win against The Croft after going 3-0 down in the singles, the Pool Club 'B' won a close game against the Pool Club 'A' by the same score 7-5 after winning the first 3 singles and the Queens beat the Halsetown Inn 7-5 away from home. All in all a good start to the season that bodes well for the coming weeks.

Performance of the Week : Golden Lion 'B'

The AGM was held at the Croft on Thursday 7th September 2006 at which all this years burning issues were debated with gusto and passion. The turnout was very good with only two teams not turning up but both phoning to give apologies due to working commitments, Dirk (our Chairman ) was late as usual and Stuart of the 3 Ferrets was even later as is customary. Dirk gave a stirring report to kick the meeting off then passed onto Andy (our Secretary) who droned on for a bit, then we moved onto Committee elections. Firsf up Chairman, Dirk again, then Secretary/Treasurer, Andy again, then committee members Duncan (Cornish Arms 'A'), Roger (Sheaf of Wheat), Rob (Golden Lion 'A'), Paul (Golden Lion 'B'), Steve (Pool Club 'A') and Steve (British Legion). After the Committee elections came the confirmation of Teams for this season, The Lifeboat Inn and The Isobar had sent representatives to seek election to the elite St Ives League but unfortunately for these two teams all teams from last year were still in place and willing to accept the challenge of tackling the gruelling season ahead once again. This sparked a lively debate about trying to accomadate these two new teams with some excellent suggestions and some not quite so excellent ideas being tabled, in the end it was decided to stay with the 16 teams from last year and some changes were put in place for next season (see the Constitution for the changes, I don't want to spoil it for you). Anyway the meeting was then more or less over with no other real issues being raised, so Dirk closed the meeting and we all left full of anticipation and excitement for the first fixtures which will be on the 21st September 2006. Good Luck everyone.
